OK....I've lived in London all of my (adult) life, so i've never need a car, but now i'm moving out into the burbs, so i do....but having never bought one before its somewhat intimidating...

Are there any guides out there? I'm looking for a decent sized family car - something like a Ford Focus size....for about 5 grand. Is that reasonable? I looked on Parkers, and that seems like a reasonable budget.

Presuambly i'd be better off going to a dealer, rather than a private seller, as i'm gullible enough to get ripped off otherwise. Presumably if i go for a reputable dealer i'm fairly protected?

So are there any decent models i should consider? Any that i should avoid? Any websites with 'an idiots guide to buying a car'?????

Christ...i feel like such a newb. Have pity on me.....

What makes you think a dealer will not try and get every single penny they can out of you?

Get a Focus, great cars. Are you wanting a faster car at all, if so get the 2.0 Focus Zetec. If not then just get the 1.6 Focus Ghia or Zetec. Just make sure you get the climate pack. Handles really well and parts are easy to come by.

Though if you dont mind going larger you do have the Mondeo maybe. Seems to be 2000/2001 models around your price range. Again if your not that bothered about performance get yourself the 2.0 Ghia X.

Find a mate that knows about cars, or at least someone who has bought a few times 2nd hand before to help you out. Its useful to have someone 3rd party to you looking at the car also.
