I'm looking for a 3d monitor to be used with my xbox 360 and the odd movie in 3d. I want to test out 3d without shelling out too much. Here are the ones I have found so far.

Samsung S23A700D

LG D2342P

LG DM2780

BenQ XL2420T

I am unsure whether to go for passive or active 3d, as xbox may look better in passive despite the cut resolution. Apparently the LG monitors above come with the wrong glasses quite often, but can you buy these seperately or do you need to contact LG directly?
The BenQ looks to have the best picture quality from what I have seen, but does it come with glasses, and if not where do I buy these? The samsung is tempting but the BenQ might be better?
The DM2780 may be quite a bit more expensive than the D2342P, so is the extra 4" worth it?
Are there other monitors I have missed which are better or better value?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I like knowing I have bought the right product. :)

Hi there,

Of that lot I would personally go with the Samsung S23A700D- since it is both active 3D, supports HDMI 1.4 3D sources and can run in 120Hz 2D with a PC (using the DVI connection). Also, if you buy this monitor in the next few days you can claim the VAT back from samsung.

The LG passive monitors will also work - so if you prefer passive 3D then this would also be a decent option. Though bear in mind that you won't get the 120Hz 2D option offered on active 3D monitors like the samsung, and as you say there do see to be issues with getting the right glasses. If you can pay the extra then I would go for the DM2780 if you think you will use the 3D a lot - since a larger screen size tends to make the 3D effect feel more convincing (here is a visual comparison of the screen size of 23 and 27in 16:9 monitors).

The BenQ XL2420T is a nice monitor for 3D if you are mainly using a PC with a nvidia graphics card or play PC games in 2D at 120Hz. However, this won't work with a HDMi 1.4 device in 3D (like the Xbox 360) - since there are no glasses or syncing equipment integrated with this display. For PC 3D use it relies on a separate Nvidia 3D vision kit - bit this only works on a PC with an Nvidia graphics card, not with an Xbox.

Ok, I have a perfect solution for you:

Fujitsu P23T-6P FPR

- Passive 3D
- 23"
- IPS
- 300€

If I've understood correctly, this is currently the only 3D IPS computer monitor on the market (?).

If going with this, make sure the FPR is in the name, because there's also one without it, which doesn't offer 3D. Don't be afraid if it's only 6, instead of 6P, though. It's apparently just a different revision, but same functionalities.

Other extra features (but which you didn't list as important factors):
- pivot
- LED backlight (edge)
- 1920x1080
- 1xDisplayport, 1xDVI, 1xD-Sub

Hmm, just realized it doesn't have HDMI, so you'll have to get HDMI-DVI adapter for the X-Box... And not sure actually if it will work with X-Box's 3D function, either. Actually, when using DVI-HDMI adapter, it means you can't use HDMI for sound, either. Have to use RCA, for example.

Here's a link to homepage, in any case:

+1. Good Advice

If you've got an AMD GPU then the Samsung 700D, if you've got an Nvidia then the passive LG.

I might be wrong but the Samsung 700d does work fine with a Nvidia GPU as long as you have the right connections correct me if i,m wrong please ?

I think its more to do with the samsung designed more for amd gpu's so you need to do a little fiddling around if you have nvidia ones AFAIK.

Nvidia and the 700D is only side by side as Nvidia don't support frame sequential via Tridef and there's no native Nvidia 3D Vision support.

Not so much being designed for AMD, more of Nvidia not supporting anything that isn't there own stuff.
