First of all a big hello.

I am new to this forum so treat me kindly.

I have just got a new PC from Delland although there is an integrated graphics card in there I am looking for a new one so my new computer can handle up to date games (ie Call Of Duty 4).

My computer is a Vostro 200 with a Dual Core 2.2 GHz processor 2000MB Ram and has 320 GB of memory, the card it already has is an integrated Intel x3100.

I am just wondering if there are any cards that any of you would recommend ranging from anywhere between 40-100 pounds.

I have been looking at a few and the 7600 GT I hear is good value for money also the ATI 9600XT ( I think) is apparently good.

I will be greatful for any advice as I am trying to learn.

edit: party of my concern is also the size of the card I will be getting aswell as I am not sure what would be a suitable size for my computer.

firstly is you system agp or pci-e?

secondly i would not touch the 9600 with a barge pole. The 7600 is old tech now, being only dx9.

Personally if you are going for modern games and have pci-e the minimum is a 3850pro or x1950pro. The prior being better.
 
i have a nvidia 7800 gt at the moment and it runs call of duty 4 on full graphics fine , but it wont run crysis and lags a bit on medal of honour airbourne , not sure how much they are now
 
it would have to be a 3850 256mb or x1950pro 256/512mb for your budget. both great cards. avoid cards like the 2600pro/xt or 8600gt/gts as the performance they offer is nothing compared to the first two.
 
Why do a lot of people call it 3850pro or 3870xt. AMD have got rid of all suffixes. The cards are simply called HD 3850 or HD 3870. If anyone thinks otherwise, show me a box which calls either of the cards using those suffixes.

The core names are rv670pro and rv670xt.

I think its just for easy referance as we move through this dificult transition... even overclockers are still using the pro and xt prefix.. :p heh we all know what they mean though.

There are different types of PCI Express slots and some DELL's only come with a 1x or 4x slot, you need to check and see if you have a PCI-E x16 slot. If your unsure then open the case and take some digital images and post them up here for us to look at.
 
Do you see a lot of difference between the same card at 512 and 256Mb?

Also, aren't the Vostro 200 machines quite small? Would there be heat problems with any of these cards?
 
Depends what games you play. I bought a 7600GT (Factory overclocked - Gainward Golden Sample jobbie) a year or so ago, and it has given my PC a new lease on life. I was a bit limited for choice being only AGP.

I play stuff like Lotro, Wow, Vanguard, EvE online, CiV IV, C&C generals, Anno 1701, MOO2, Dungeon Keeper, Oblivion .. to name but a few. I do NOT play first person shooters. I could afford to buy myself the bits for a complete new rig anytime I wanted, but there is no need.

In the past year things have moved on - but the 7600 Gt is fine for me.

Vista is a bit of a disaster for Microsoft so far. Don't base your buying decision on DX10.
