My mate is currently running an X850XT, and he's looking for a good card to replace it with. He's got about £100-£120 at most to spend and its got to be pcie, from the ones he's looked at already we thought about the best was the X1950XT 256mb, he can pick one up for about £105.

Would this be a good enough card for current and a few upcoming games like Bioshock, would it be good enough to run at at around 1280x1024 with some eye candy on?

Any other suggestions please let me know.

Stay with the x850XT until he can save some extra cash and get and the 8800gts.

If he plans on playing some of the upcoming games then in my opinion the X1950xt just is not going to cut it, especially if he wants some the 'eye candy' these games are going to provide.

Trust me, I know because I'm using the same card, which will be up for sale shortly as I will be upgrading myself and I've only had it about 8 weeks. I'm regretting buying it now to be honest.

See, the big problem we are now seeing (due to lack of competition probably) is what I call the Great Divide. You've got circa £100 gfx cards, then nothing until you reach circa £200.

Absolutely bugger all in the middle. What happened to the £140 - £160 bang for Buck cards!! :( .

* if he really wants to change his gfx card, tell him to either save up until he can get a 8800GTS or get the cheapest X1950Pro you can find, they are going VERy cheap some places, circa £65.

Use google Products search to help you.

Well he's not going to be changing until around Sept time, but he just wanted to get a rough idea now of what card to go for. I looked at some benchmark between an X1950 Pro and an X1950XT, and although there is a price difference i thought the extra fps the XT had was worth it. But i suppose come sept prices will change and there could be something good for that price range.

I recently bought a Powercolour X1950XT 512MB for about £137, very good card (fast and quiet) and about £100 cheaper than a GeForce 8800GTS 640MB!

That's £100 saved towards my next card :D

dont buy gtx or 1 gig xt now no point as 9800gtx is around the corner + better performance and 8800gtx will drop price and xt as well
