As per title really,

I need a webcam to chat with a friend in another country and not sure what to get. Most seem to be rubbish quality and the cheapies I have never worked properly so I want something solid and preferably from a big brand so getting hold of drivers/support won't be an issue. don't care about single frame quality just video quality.

Willing to spend upto about £30-£45 on it.

Any ideas? Is it better to go with a respected components company such as Logitech or a company that has experience with cameras such as samsung/fujitsu?

Overclockers seem to offer Logitech or Microsoft but suggestions don't have to be limited to that.

Thanks,
Namak

I got the Logitech Pro 9000, Retails at 59.99 but Obviously I didn't pay that much for it.
Even so it is Superb & does exactly what one would require from a Quality webcam, The pics/vid is Mint & my sexy gonad showing boxers have never looked so good. :D

Well Basically you can't expect the Doris to get her Bristols out unless she can see you are alone. :D You have to record all you see & then host it on a site later for your mates. :p

Thanks! Its good to know the proper ettiquette for these things :D

My logitech stx has decent driver support and integrates with Skype/MSN pretty well along with a half decent control panel.

It's quite old but still does the job well.

I think I have almost decided on this now having checked out some reviews. I have a couple of questions though if you don't mind....

- Do you think £50 is a good price? Seems to be the best I can find.

- Have you had any problems with the software? A few people on xxxx are reporting issues although they seem to be in the minority.

edit - forgot about the competitor rule!

I bought a logitech E3500 one if you buy one and are running win 7 RC 64 bit do not install from Disk and choose vista like i did. My PC is still not running right since doing that but since I'll have to reformat next month anyway I'm just leaving it for the moment. It works for Skype and the like.

bit of a noob pointer, but video quality isn't necessarily what the other person will see. I'm not sure why If I'm honest but figure that it relies a lot on how good the connection between the two people is. (broadband connection, not Met in RL connection ;D)

This is something that annoyed my girlfriend something awful.

Thanks for the responses guys!

@jas 72 - Not running win 7 yet although hope to upgrade soon so hopefully Logitech will update drivers if i go with them. One of the reasons why I don't want some unknown name chinese thing from the market. Logitech seems to be a popular choice and hopefully reputable enough that it will release Win 7 drivers.

@mynameisjarvis - yeah it probably is a noob pointer but its something that I guess I hadn't given as much thought to as I should have so thanks. My friend has a pretty poor connection. Still I would rather go with something quality I think and be limited by the connection rather than the camera.

The only other thing I am worried about is compatibility of drivers with my TV card. As they both record video playback I have heard that they can interfere with each other. Anyone have any experience using drivers for both on the same system?
