Basically please dont say either noctua or thermalright ultra extreme, ive had both, noctua struggles to keep it under 80c @ 3.2ghz, the ultra extreme i could never have it oriented the right way so temps were also hiting 80c with a 1600rpm fan.

Been looking at some others, the big typhon, and the zalman 9500 cnps (i think). Im sort of restricted by my case and mobo, case is a lian li v1000+ and mobo is an asus p35k. The cpu socket is very near the edge of the board and the board is very close to the case botom so anything that overlaps by any real amount can't be fitted.

Thats a 92mm noctua and you can see how close it is to the bottom of the atx compartment.

:(

The thing i find most amusing and somewhat weird, when i ordered the quad i got an artic freezer with it, was told by a lot of people here the freezer couldn't handle it..fuin thing is its the only cooler i have that can keep the quad at 3.2 @ around 70c.

Well those are some strange results you got there! the thermalright ultra extreme is the best cooler out there so if that doesnt do it no air cooling will :(

It never was able to sit the proper way thouugh, air was being pushed to the bottom of the case an inch or so away basically just heating up that section.

The zalmans meant to be good as is the big typhoon, jus a matter of if they can be installed.

How good is your case airflow? If the notcha doesnt keep things cool i dont see the zalman or big typhoon being much of an improvement :(

Its ok, 2 120's at the front 1 exhaust above the gfx cards and one behind the cpu area.

120 probably would have been good if i was able to get it in the correct orientation, never was though so its more a matter of a good hsf that can duct to the back exhaust instead of straight down.

tuniq tower 120 i think fits in the lian li the correct way
but isnt this a thermalright in the same case as yours in the correct orientation?

Its in the correct orientation but on a different mobo, the 775 socket on this seems to be lower than on most other boards so it doesn't fit :(

same setup here witha lot more crammed in and it idles at 40 and 68 loaded.

Looks to me like you have your rear 120mm fan and cpu fan facing the wrong way as im told the case was designed on a pressure system. and that back 120mm supplies the cold air in.

I have mine this way and the hot air pours out the top.

Indeed - the Freezer 7 Pro keeps my QX6700 below 70C at 3.0 GHz no problems at all. For the price, it is an exceptional cooler. And ignoring the price, it is still an exceptional cooler :)

Bit noisy though when the fan spins up.

It's time to break into water.

This is the trend with air cooling now.

All that is happening, sinks are getting bigger and heat pipes are getting thicker.

It's ridiculous and causes the problems you have with compatibility.

Pretty odd setup for the lian li's, initially i just thought someone had attached the fan in the wrong orientation, now it sems it should go that way.

Gonna try tomorrow with the noctua with that fan config, probably end up going back to the artic freezer though as i can't see that config dropping temps 10c.

Yes the rear fan on the v1000 should be blowing the cold air from the outside the case through the cpu cooler...

With the rear fan sucking air out the case, this would mean that your sucking hot air from inside the case through the cpu cooler...

Well if thats the case it would seem the vast majority on this forum have their fans set the wrong way, in the majority of cases the fan directly behind the cpu socket is set to exhaust air and not suck it in. Seens tons of case gallerys featuring this case and before i got this case id never seen a pic of it with the fan behind the cpu set to suck air in.

Made absoloutely no difference to temps anyway, still rocketing upto 80c in record time.

my best advice is put it on ebay and buy your self the new GO version.

That's the best advice you will get stop messing with it and sell it!! its obviously a hot running one

zalman 9500 fite.. this is on a bfg 680i board though, but it is VERY close to the bottom of the case, so i would say the 9700 would never fit...

all watercooled now though :D

Bloody annoying that the ultra would have fitted if the cpu socket was about an inch or even half an inch higher up on the motherboard :(

How about going for a watercooled setup ??? both your problems should be solved this way,,,(lower temps & less space needed for a waterblock)
