Hi everyone.

My bro's PC has stopped working and today is the first time we've been able to take a look at it. The PC when powered on just refuses to POST. It all powers up, but the screen says "check signal cable".

So we took a look at the GPU and the fan was not spinning, so our first thoughts were that it was dead. We took it out and I plugged it into my PC just to see if would boot. Sure enough it powered up and fan began spinning and it the PC began to boot up.

We tried the card back in my bro's PC and it still refused to work, but the fan would now spin intermittently.

What do we think....

1. Slightly b0rked GPU?
2. Broken PSU, not supplying enough juice?
3. PCIe slot on Mobo?

With regards to the PSU, my bro has mentioned the PC has become harder and harder to switch on and off via the button. It's not just an easy press, sometimes you have to hold it in to work... my bro says there's a "knack" to getting it to switch on and off. Could point more to the PSU being the culprit?

Thanks for any info. :)

any chance you can pop your psu onto his system ?

think your spot on with the 3 options you listed, psu sounds a good bet (2nd would be pci-e slot), what gfx card /psu is your brother running ?

Hi

He's running an 8800GTX and *I think* a 700/800w OCZ GameXStream PSU... same as mine I believe. :)

Yeah I think we'll try the PSU option first and go from there. He says he wants a new GPU anyway, but I don't think it's that which is broken.

Thanks!

ive been having the same problem fans would spin except gfx card and didnt make post, sometimes it would boot but most times it wouldnt i rma mobo which they did find a fault with but whilst i was waiting i bought another mobo (same one) everythhing was good to start with but within 3-4 days i had same problem again.
i just bought another psu which has arrived today and will let u know if that solves the problem.

Yeah please. Look forward to your update!

Ok, small update.

We took his PC and put it next to mine and we ran my PCIe power leads into his card and switched on both PC's. Still nothing.

So I dusted off the old trustworthy 7300GS (lol) and we put this in his PC. This card requires no extra power connectors. Switched it on and still no signal. We then tried this in another PCIe slot on his mobo and still nothing.

I think it's the mobo that's knacked. There's also a red l.e.d on which we haven't noticed before, but the display still reads FF, which AFAIK means it's OK.

But from the testing we've done, we've proved that:-

1. The GPU works in my PC.
2. Another GPU does not work in any PCIe slots on his mobo.
3. Power from another working PSU does not help.

Are we all agreed on the Mobo?

Cheers. :)

Its either PSU or mobo, you will need to connect more than just the PCI-E connector to check if its the PSU thats the problem i.e. All mobo connectors. If it works with your PSU its the PSU thats borked if it does the same with your PSU its the mobo.

as per bambi if you can wire your psu up to the mobo etc so it properly powers the whole system, should rule out the psu being the issue, leaving the mobo as the problem.
