I was looking on some other forums, and some guy had the same problem. After some messing about, he did get it sorted in the end. Switching from 'front mic' to 'microphone' fixed it for him. As it was hidden, he didn't know about it.
Someone else has the same problem in a different thread here. He has a Xonar Xense, and can't get his microphone to work. It also says 'unavailable' in the Windows sound properties.
