Hi,

I have got a Linksys wired/wireless router, now it works all fine with the net for the 2 pcs that are connected via the wired ports. Now am wanting to get my brothers laptop working on the network. The strange thing is that his pc can see the shared hard disc drives, but no net. Oh yes, he has no firewalls running and pinging works on the router. He also has the correct security key to allow him to get into the network. Any ideas?

Can you get to a web page via the IP address? Might be a DNS issue with the wireless NIC?
i.e. It's been manually configured to the wrong dns servers, rather than auto?

Ok little update, just tried connecting the laptop via wired connection to the netowrk, worked perfect with no alterations to settings.

I also have just tried via direct IP on wireless, it worked perfect. Any ideas how to sort out the DNS?

Go into the settings for the wireless lan connection from control panel and network connections. Click properties, then select Internet Protocol and properties again.

At the bottom should be a DNS bit, if it's not already set to "Obtain DNS automatically" then set it to that.

Thanks! My brother had been fiddling with the laptop and put a preferred DNS which was for the old router. Love how quick you can get replies here!
