Need help getting Left 4 Dead to start! At wit's end!

Try the solutions here. The initial solution suggest some options menu changes which obviously wont help you, but you can still make these changes via the 'Set Launch Options' command.

If the above link does not help. Have you tried disabling virus scanner/Firewall. I seem to remember most Valve games auto launch the windows firewall allow/disallow window when launching for the first time.

And that's on the initial loading screen?

That looks more like the loading screen when it's trying to load a custom map and there's no poster for it.

How do you do this? That option just gives me a box to type stuff in.

Yes I know, it's weird, isn't it. This has happened ever since I had W7. Never happened on Vista.

Sorry to bump but any ideas? Really need some help with this one.
Sorry, beyond reinstalling and checking the game cache, I can't think of anything. It almost seems like it's looking in the wrong places for files when it should know where they are. Have you considered deleting the entire folder setup for L4D before reinstalling or checking the cache?

No. So, instead of deleting the content through Steam, just delete the whole thing in the Steam folder itself?

Just thought maybe the game was being a pain and looking in the wrong place for stuff. Perhaps try deleting the game through Steam, removing all L4D directories manually through Explorer, deleting Steam's client.blob file, running Steam and installing again? It's all I can think to suggest.

Before deleting the local content from within Steam, you could try deleting your config file from the game folder.
