Need help, just finished building my first PC

Hey, after getting advice on what parts to get I recently collected them and began to build my PC, first time around I built it into the case and got a power error beep. So, I re-built it outside the case (reseating the RAM, processor and GPU and reseting the CMOS) and now have it working, but all sitting on my floor.

So I put in the Win7 disc and it started with the usual "loading windows" and then "starting windows" it then just stopped, stuck on the background colour you get at login, with a mouse cursor but no other information. So I retried that a couple of times and nothing happened. Inserted the motherboard recovery disc and hit reboot, and (I can't remember if I tried win7 again and it did the same) but I tried with ubuntu, now it just says "building operating system..." on startup with no option to boot from CD etc...

Any ideas? I am a complete novice, and it could therefore be something really simple.

Thanks for your help.

ETA: I unplugged the HDD, which seemed to stop the "building operating system" thing, anyway now I'm stuck with a harddriveless computer that can boot and run Ubuntu off of CD but gets stuck halfway through the windows install. I also can't seem to get into BIOS, tried pretty much every key on the keyboard, but like I said, I'm a novice and have only been pressing the buttons the internet tells me to press.

we need more details.....what motherboard, memory, power supply etc etc...some pics of how you got it set up at the moment may help as well

Right, turning into problem after problem. Left Windows 7 on that screen for what felt like an hour. And it eventually got to the install part. Now Windows can't find my HDD so I can't install it. :(.

For reference my system is:

HIS iCooler V ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £232.99
(£198.29) £232.99

Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £13.99

And just imagine all the components on the floor with everything conected up ok. GPU, RAM and processor are on the mobo, obv. SATA cables connecting the CD drive and HDD to the mobo, with all the power connected up properly, plus all the case front wired up to the mobo too. I would upload, but I'm on 3G phone internet (just moved house) and would take forever and a day to upload stuff.

ETA: Booted from Ubuntu CD then made a partition, just starting up Win7 to try and install to the partition.

are you still unable to get into the bios ?

when it boots up does it identify the hard disk and the dvd drive ?

have you tried swapping the sata cables over between dvd and hard disk ?

have you tried using different sata ports on the mobo ?

Yeah managed to get into BIOS, HDD was detected so booted ubuntu made a partition and now installing Win7 to that partition, success! Just have to see if everything runs smoothly now...

Is there a good way to check, after win7 installation, that everything is at the performance level it should be? Or should I fit the components in the case before running any kind of benchmark?

Cheers everyone for your help so far.

And for the lulz...

nah put everything back in the case, make sue it still works then bench from there.

no lulz, been there and done it (too many painful times to mention lol), still reckon thats the best way too build before slapping it in a case, why waste time putting it all in there then have to take it out to rma the mobo :D.
