Okay, so basically i'm a noob... lol.

I have a spare PC with the following specs:

P4 2.8ghz Processor - overclocked to 3.04ghz
1GB Ram
200GB HDD
80GB HDD
I also have a 4mb virgin media (cable) internet connection.

How do i go about making this into a server so i can make a site. (selling hosting)

Thanks for all help

Install a web server software on it such as Apache

Configure it using common sense

Make sure the server is open to the internet this means port forwarding if you are using a router, refer to your routers manual for more information.

Get a 'fat' internet connection. Or alternativly buy a reseller account from a web hoster

Hope i have been of assistance :)

You'll also need a UPS for both the computer and all the networking equipment. Remember that when you're selling hosting your main three goals are, in order: uptime, uptime, and uptime. Redundant disks wouldn't be a bad idea either so as not to lose your customers' data if you experience a disk failure.

I'd recommend CentOS or Debian for the OS then install Apache and PHP.

I've seen ubuntu server, and that seems very easy to install and everything. One problem is that i need something like cPanel thats either under £30 or free.

ISPConfig is a free alternative to CPanel :)
Awesome.. So is that everything i need?

Also, could someone give me a step by step guide on how to make a server. I will be using Ubuntu 7.04 Server and ISPConfig. I already have a domain registered with NameCheap

Thanks

Sorry, if you're going to use your server to sell a service then telling you how to do it is chargeable consultancy...

I'm afraid I'm going to put a big downer on your ideas. Selling hosting is much more than just using a spare PC to make a few quid. Consider why anyone would want to buy space from you rather than an established company - what's your unique selling point? How are you backing up your clients' data? What's your disaster recovery plan? How long will it take to get back up and running if your computer fails? Understand that you're selling a service and that implies legal contracts with guarantees of uptime and data protection.

By all means give it a try to see how things work but to try to offer a commercial service on the, frankly, toy computer you're proposing to use would, I believe, be foolish.

To be honest, that'd probably be quite slow and I doubt you could compete with the giants offering massive aounts of space and bandwith for close to £5 a month.

Yeah i've decided to get a Master Reseller now. Is there any free alternatives to Client Exec Billing System?
