Hi everyone,

i have a friend whos just moved house and wants to connect his Home hub in the living room from the telephone connection point in the hall. He needs around 7m cable but which one does he need cat5e or patch or is there any difference?

Also he needs a pc wireless card what ones do you guys recommend for under £25?

Do you mean he want's to extend the incoming phone line into the lounge and put the homehub in the lounge, or leave the homehub in the hall and have a network cable extension to the living room.

I would personally suggest the latter, as it's amazing how even a little extra cable on the ADSL (telephone end) can affect stability/sync speed of the connection (especially if the cable gets run near power cables)

For the first option, you will need telephone extension cable (RJ11 I think.. Male to male).
Second option will need a standard 'Ethernet cable' also called Cat5/Cat5e/network cable/Rj45 Cable. Also male to male.

As for a wireless card, USB or PCMCIA/Cardbus? If he has a PCMCIA/Cardbus slot (if it's a laptop) i'd recommend one of those as it doesn't protrude as much and looks neater IMO than a USB wifi card.

Well if he wants to move the homehub he needs a phone line extension, but these can effect performance on the line.

As for a wireless connection, under £25 will be fine. Id avoid USB ones personally if there is PCI or PCMCIA port free. Just check driver support if he has x64 bit OS
