my current setup:

asus sabertooth z170 S
i7 6700k
noctua NH D9L
gigabyte Gtx 1070 (literally just sold it though for funds to upgrade)
acer predator 24.5 inch 1080p 240hz monitor

Im looking to get solid 120fps+ in every game at 1080p, including games like pubg, witcher 3, assassins creed origins, and fortnite(which i can already do with this setup)

problem is that my processor is defective so i will need a new one, resulting probably in a new mobo too.
my budget is £1.2k and i would preferably like to buy the parts second hand, so i need a gpu, cpu, mobo.
i hopefully want to get as high fps as possibly obviously, but i dont want to pay an extra £100 for 5-10fps, so it might be far under budget if theres little difference between that and the higher model.
I would like to use my noctua cooler but im not to sure if its possible with the new sockets and all.
My main concern is whether i should wait till the 11 or 20 series? I kind of want the parts now but i wont be using the rig a lot till 16th june and after (exams finish on 15th). is it worth waiting for the 11 series and will the 1180 be more expensive than the 1080 ti / 1080 on release date? im hoping its quite low due to the bitcoin crash

how do you know it's defective?
if it is, and you bought a boxed processor, warranty is 3 years
and intel warranty is pretty good, so getting a replacement should not be a problem
was an oem bought in august 2016
ive been through multiple gpus and monitor and multiple reinstalls yet in many games i get constant stuttering, it just skips frames all the time and ive had it for a while now, i still get high fps but it looks awful when its jumping frames all the time. ive never found out whats going wrong but i can only assume its the cpu/mobo

what games causes these issues?
how much ram?
are your installs on HDD or SSD?
is page file on SSD?
Witcher 3, assassins creed origins, pubg, rust, escape from tarkov, occasionally csgo, there are a couple games like shadow of War and fortnite where there's no issue at all. My desktop also stutters frequently, if I drag a tab around if often jumps frames and is very jittery
16gb
ssd
Dont know what that is

have you done the usual?
memtest -> prime95 -> furmark/kombustor

would be a shame to waste money without getting to the root of the problem first...
I did prime 95 assuming that's the one with the fire and it came back as fine, can try the others tomorrow though. And yea I agree, I guess it's just my instinct to buy a new one as I'm fed up of dealing with it for almost 2 years now

oh, intel burn test...similar to prime95 then.
also i'm assuming you have your bios settings all at default/reset.
try running memtest. cpu failures are rare (not that it can't happen), but i wouldn't be so quick to blame that in the first instance
if it happens on the desktop as well, as you say, have you tried using the integrated graphics on the cpu to see if you can replicate the problem?
do you mean trying running games with the integrated graphics? if so, i cant run any game high enough fps to even tell stuttering.

odd. i can't really explain without physically looking at the computer and seeing the settings.
at no load, this shouldn't happen unless there's something really wrong with the setup/power settings
just another thought, is the computer connected to the monitor via HDMI or DP?
if HDMI, try swapping to DP
DP

well the only upgrade is from the 6700k is to the 8700k...so...
if you have the budget, might as well get the 1070ti/1080 whilst you're at it (obvs the 1070ti is better value-for-money)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £451.98 (includes shipping: £0.00)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £990.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)
will my noctua cooler work with that motherboard? what do you mean by only upgrade? what about the 7700k etc? do you think a 8700 + 1070 ti > 8600 + 1080 ti ?

yes

going from 6700k (4c8t) to 8600k (6c6t) is more of a sidegrade

pointless. for all intents and purposes, 6700k = 7700k.

8700k + 1080ti > all
ah ok, what i mean is that in terms of price an 8700+1070ti is about 750, 8600 + 1080 ti is about 940, would there be a noticeable perfomance upgrade with that £200? and if im moving the cooler, do i need some thermal stuff or anything or do i just screw it in?

well of course. 1080ti is like 1.3-1.4x performance of a 1070ti,
but 8600k processor may bottleneck the 1080ti in a select few games that are highly multithreaded (like bf4)

yes, recommend thermal grizzly cryonaut.
ok, is this a hard thing to do or is it quite easy? i dont remember putting thermal paste on when i installed it.

what do you mean?

the heatsink normally comes with some preinstalled/preapplied already - that's why
but now that you're changing the heatsink onto a new build, you'll need to clean off the old thermal compound and reapply some new thermal compound

who knows when it'll be out? there's speculation, but nothing definite
to apply a heatsink to another cpu, is it risky or anything. assuming nvidia keep up with their past schedule, the 11 series should come out in june / july, but id be a bit dissapointed to buy a 1080 ti just for a new one to come out and the value to drop massively.

ryzen 2nd gen coming out in 2 weeks

rumours (and that's all they are) end of the year z390 +/- 8 core processors
oh great then ill wait for ryzen i guess, is there any info on what they are? i dont want one of those crazy threadrippers for like £1000, hoping they will be about 300-400 max
i also just got an offer:
prebinned 8700k 4.7 (from ocuk, the one you have to pay extra for)
asus z370-e strix motherboard
gigabyte aorus 1080 ti (dont know if its the extreme version yet)
corsair h100i v2
= £1270 including shipping
is that a good offer?

What are your temperatures like because looking at reviews of your cooler shows it not to be very good at all? What case do you have and how is the airflow set up in it? The cooler could be forcing the cpu to throttle which would explain the stuttering. That cooler does not come with paste pre-applied either so if you haven't put any on it there more than likely isn't any. Noctua usually supplies a tube of their own NT-H1 paste with their coolers.
fractal design r5, 2 140mm at front, 1 140mm exhaust at the back.
idle temp is 35-43
load temp is 80-82 82-88 80-84 80-81
i was using realtemp and it gives 4 values im assuming its for each thread or something, this is while using intel burn test at stress level maximum (result gives success)

this is while at 4.5ghz at 1.327v (the oc isnt causing the stuttering, i get it with and without it)
