need help optimizing my website for google!

is there anyone who could please help me optimize my site for google or point me to somewhere that shows me how?
all the commercial websites charge a hefy fee for optimization and i would only be willing to spend half that!

Use H tags well, keywords arn't as important as they used to be. Backlinks and outgoing links help but only to high ranked sites. There's lots more but it's a bit of a black art, googling will bring up quite a fair bit of info so you can get a feel of what works and what doesn't.

SEOmoz.org has a wealth of good articles.

Make sure your URL's are clean, so:

/index.php?section=news&id=4

would be bad, but using a bit of mod_rewrite magic to make

/news/4-some-news-item.html

would be better. Even better than that would be getting the id number out of the url, but you get the basic gist.
