I installed my new Asus P5N-E, C2D E6600 and GeIL 2GB 6400C4 800MHz today but I am hacing touble overclocking with this board. I have read the overclocking sticky but it doesnt really help.

I overclocked my old 3700SD to 2.8GHz so I am not really a noob at overclocking but I have no experience with clocking Intel chips. I had a look in the BIOS but I am very unsure on what settings to change. Can somebody who has experience with overclocking a C2D on the Asus P5N-E please help me by telling me what things I should be changing.

Thanks.

CPU Voltage - 1.35v to 1.45v
Vdimm - 2.1V ish
NB Voltage - 1.5xxV (make sure you have some airflow over the NB, it gets hot!)

FSB settings - Linked, RAM in synch

Chipset --> Memory --> CAS 4, tRCD 4, tRP 4, tRAS 12, command rate 2T everything else to auto.

Then start upping the FSB from 1033 QDR and test for stability.

My 6300 is at 3.0 with the mem unlinked (at the mo) and im ripping CD's (V Quickly) and the Temps are 20C CPU (Speedfan/Asusprobe).
Very happy so far.
Will test over night

Hmm... I think something is very wrong.

I am using a Tuniq tower and according to Core Temp my E6600 is reaching temps of 55-60 degrees after 15 mins of Orthos blend at stock 2.4GHz... I tried re-seating the HSF but it hasnt changed. I was expecting to get MUCH better temps with this cooler?

Anyone?

Sure the temps are being read correctly, seems a bit hot to me

Im as sure as I can be. The temp readings are what Core Temp is telling me. For some reason TAT wont work on my PC...

TAT doesn't work for me either, maybe your chip has a bad IHS or something, but those temps are far too high :(

Me neither, thank god im not the only one, its the only phase of this build that hasnt gone according to plan.
3.0 and temps are just nudging 20C idle :D
Tis what speedfan is saying anyway.
1st Intel ive ever owned and im loving it.

TAT wont work on non intel boards and this one is by nvidia :)

Check your cpu ihs is flat. In a darkened room, place a razor blade on the IHS to see if it is flat, place a torch behind to see where light comes in between the edge of the razor and the IHS surface.

You can do the same for the HSF as well

That will be why then,
my E6300 was convex so i lapped it.
*EDIT*
In the Bios its saying
CPU 29C
Mobo 27C
Thats with 1.4V +1 V Core
1.92 Mem ( 2Gig Geil Value stuff from this weeks special)
NB Auto

Got mine to 2.7 orthos stable with no problems. Got temps of 46 while orthos is running. Hopefully a long way to go as soon as i sort my CPU block bracket out. Its broken so the block isnt totally seccure so should knock a fair chunk off that temp when fixed. :D

Looks like I have a cruddy chip then. Im quite dissapointed because the main reason I bought an E6600 is because of all the great overclocks I have been reading about.

Same reason i got my CPU. Thats really unlucky, are you sure the temps are correct? They seem very "off". You have tried reseating it... i cant think of anything else. Lapping? But might not be worth the time for the results.

I have re seated it once but it made no difference. Tomorrow I'm going to fit the stock cooler and see how hot it gets out of interest. I have no idea on how I would go about lapping it.

Its currently idleing at 54 degrees!! Its so damn annoying...

What bios settings are you using (vcore etc)?

Speedfan doesn't read the cores, it reads the CPU socket, so it's a good indication of how hot the CPU socket is. You have to use CoreTemp to get a proper CPU temperature result.

It's incredible to me that some users are trying to compare socket temperatures with core temperatures and even across manufacturers - statements like 'My old X2 used to idle cooler than this. I'm very disappointed' are quite common. If AMD had fitted core temperature sensors I doubt that would have been the case.
