ok so i was playing oblivion this afternoon and all of a sudden the pc locked up.ok so i hit reset button. pc then started then stopped with nothing showing on monitor. just jet black screen. then it started again .then stopped after a few seconds.then stopped.then started ..get the idea. so what has all of sudden cause this to happen. pc is.
8500 intel giga ep45ds3 4 gb ram 4870 1gb video card. seasonic power. had no problems since i built it in december.. fan on gpu spins fan on cpu spins. hd spin. but nothin posts to start. any ideas where to start before i have to send parts off. thanks for any input.. (had to start up old pc to get on web..thank god it still goes after 5yrs.)

try taking a stick of memory out and booting up the other thing i would try is to try taking your graphics card out and putting it back in, does ur mobo have intergrated graphics if it does try booting without the graphics card in and see if it boots then?

Elimination is key. Try all your bits in another PC if possible and try other parts (RAM, GPU mainly) in your PC.

Good luck, hope it turns out to be something easy (and cheap) to fix. Nothing worse than a non starting PC

worrying it with a 4lb lump hammer is looking on the cards. :D technology sucks sometimes.not as though any of the parts are cheap.. just don`t last..
will try any ideas you come up with in the morning.. as it`s 11pm here and have had a few beers. chers all.

Ram is mostly likely, then Graphics card, then PSU/Motherbard/CPU the cause, as already said, it's a case of checking each part. Hard if you don't have spare parts/other PC.

For ram try 1 stick at a time.

is a seasonic m12 500 w ..sureky has plenty of power for pc as it was in deal with 4870 gpu has 5yrs warranty with it.. surely it wouldn`yt even start if it was psu.. how come it`s worked from start..

psu's can die at anytime or even slowly become faulty, same with any hardware.. u should try another psu to make sure its not that.

Some years ago I had an non branded psu (re cheap and nasty) in my Athlon XP 3200 and nForce 2 based system. It was fine for nearly a year then started randomly hard crashing (working fine, sometimes 3 or more hours, then 'bink' restarting).

For ages I pulled my hair out swapping RAM, the graphics card and even swapped the board with the same results. Didn't even cross my mind it could be the PSU. Sure enough in desperation I pulled a good PSU from another system and bingo. No more crashing. Fortunately enough, I ran a computer shop so had no shortage of parts :)

It is quite unlikely it is the PSU imo, but it could be... Far more likely to be the board. Try rebuilding the whole system on your desk (on top of cardboard to stop scratching the desk or damaging the solder points on the back of the board!) to make sure it isn't shorting on your case anywhere. Even if it isn't I have seen a couple of machines come "back to life" after an external rebuild for what reason I don't know, flexing of the board perhaps... Also, clean off your CPU + HSF and re-apply some thermal paste and make absolutely sure the HSF is making sound contact.

ok so took out 1 stick of ram and cleared cmos at same time. pc started then windwos error came..told me to insert windows disc and repair.so i did.then pc just kept hanging. so tried other memory stick. and it worked.. pc is running again.. so memory is borked. i`m running vista 64 so will need more memory. so is it best to just get 4gb new memory and send both sticks back.. its patriot memory 6400 ( 800 ) what should i get ? i havent tried the good memory in the other slot on motherboard.should i try that ?just incase the motherboard slot is stuffed and not memory? cheers for all replies.

ran memtest on the 2gb installed and no problems.. so now i put the other stick back in and all is running ok.. very strange indeed.. shall memtest all memory now..

so ran memtest with all4gb in ,and got 2 mem errors after 2% .so looks like 1 stick of memory has gone bad..
