My son got a new case and PSU, and I've finished transferring to the new case. But now the pc won't get past post it seems. Lights up and fans spin for a few seconds and then it powers down and tries again.
I've gone through everything, disconnected till it's just the mobo, CPU and PSU but same thing. Tried with the old PSU and the same thing.
Can the new PSU have fried the mobo or CPU? It's a seasonic 80+ gold modular 750 watt. Case is a Corsair Carbide 750d but that can't be causing an issue surely?
Really stuck here, fortunately he has the funds for a new mobo, CPU and ram as the plan was to wait and see what was due out soon, but he's going to just get the i7 and gtx 1080 now. I'm a little worried that the PSU might fry fry the new gear though.

Sounds like the motherboard is shorting on the case. Does it boot if you build it on the motherboard box?
You're correct, it works fine if isolated from the case. What's the prognosis, is the mobo incompatible with the case? Can it be fixed?
Edit, thanks so much for the quick and spot on reply. Sorry, was so elated it actually stayed on I forgot my maneers

Maybe you installed a motherboard standoff in a location that doesn't match up with one on the motherboard.

These things.

If you have them installed anywhere there isn't an aligned hole on the motherboard it will possibly cause a short. Cases usually support a number of configurations, so it's an easy mistake to make. Sometimes a board might not need all the holes for a configuration also, if the case has 9 holes(stand off fittings) for ATX(for example) but your board only has 8 screwholes, you need to remove any additional standoffs that will make contact with the motherboard where there isn't a screw hole.

Thanks, that might be it as the case comes with pre installed risers so there might be some in the wrong places. I should have checked.
For the moment it is running as I used the acrews that came with the case rather than the ones from the old case.
I'll check for rogue risers tomorrow.
Top advice, thanks again

All good man :)

Just build it again and make sure you have standoffs in the right place and that they're big enough. Don't over tighten them and you'll be fine.

I'm pleased to report all is indeed fine now. I removed the motherboard from the case and checked the pre installed risers, which were all correct, I was half expecting there to be matx risers too, but only the atx ones were there. I've put it all back with only just enough tightness to ensure they won't back off, plus they're the ones that came with the case, rather than the ones from the previous case. Works perfectly.
Quite lucky nothing got fried, but learned some valuable lessons through all this. There's something wonderfully cathartic about building a PC even when you have complications, as long as they get resolved it makes it all more satisfying. Can't wait for my sons new cpu, mobo, ram and cooler to arrive :)

Yeah I built my first pc a few weeks ago. Tried to switch it on and it wouldn't power up.

Spent a full night troubleshooting it and found that the mobo was faulty so had to strip it back down and rebuild again when I got the replacement board.

Good times lol
