my 4870 went caput last night
rang the store this morning going down to take it back soon they offered me

Full refund which is £70 as i caught it in a end of line sale
or they offered me a GT240 as a replacement

need to know if the 240 will be a downgrade

Downgrade. The GT240 is really a rebadged 8800GT/GTS.

Since a 4870 is/was on par with a GTX260 192SP you would need that as an equivalent.

Therefore take the £70 and buy a 2nd hand 4870 or put the £70 to something even faster.

think i will use my 2600xt for now

tell you what tell me what card is best for me

i game at 1920x1080
play crysis a lot

RTS games which can get very busy when building multiple units like command and conquer

and any FPS i like was gonna get fallout 3 next followed by resident evil 5(one of my favourite games on ps3

judging by the info i gave you what would be the best card for me. ignoring my rig in sig as thats being sold next month to fund a phenom or i7 rig so i'd like a half decent card to get a good start i will also be switching to win 7 64bit when i build the new rig

thanks for the help

i can't really justify more than £300 on a GFX card

crossfire 4890's, will come just under £300, less if you get OcUK value cards.

I'm suggesting based off the premise that dx11 may not matter too much, and this will provide you with the highest amount of raw gpu power for around £300, more so than a 5870 I believe.

Of course if you can't crossfire with your mobo I would then suggest a 5850.
