need help regarding another upgrade

so, i've finally grown tired of my current rig. it's getting slow, and not running games brilliantly.

at the moment i'm using:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice (at 2ghz)
(i think) 1gb Corsair Value Memory (2x512mb Dual Channel)
ASUS A8N-E mobo
nVidia Geforce 7800GT

amongst others.

i can't really afford a new graphics card, and guess that it's still not so bad. i'm just wondering, should i stick with AMD or do the wonderfully expensive jump to Conroe?

if so, could you recommend me which chip and mobo to purchase.

AND, another 1GB of memory that's actually good for it's price.

i'm willing to spend about £400 perhaps (if i'm going intel) but not that much if i'm sticking with AMD.

FINALLY, what do i need to buy and how do i change chips? never done this before

and would it be worth picking up the dual core athlon 4600+ from this week only? saving a bit of cash and effort buying a new mobo also?

Unclip retention clips from heatsink by using the plastic leaver on the side. Actually might be worth running CPU for a bit before removing as the heatsink can kinda glue itself to the CPU. Once you've removed heatsink there should be a tiny plastic leaver at the side of the CPU. Flip it vertical and then remove CPU.
