Need help undervolting the 5800x. getting 90 degrees in cinebench r20 and r23 this normal?

Nope definitely not normal. As above, what cooler are you running, case/ fan setup? My 5800x doesn't get above 80c with a pretty quiet fan curve I have set up (in R23). I would recommend using a negative PBO offset of -10 and working your way up, i'm running -30 and its dropped temps by a good few degrees on idle.

I have the corsair h115i pro xt 280mm and a 4000D airflow case. Haven't changed anything from stock configurations. multiple people have reported Cinebench fetching 90 degrees so i doubt it's just me i just need to set up a good undervolt.

I'm quite new to pcs this is my first build ever, can you explain how i can undervolt? I've been using ryzen master and changing the peak core voltage and the ghz from 3800 to 4200 just to see what happens. Runs both cinebench tests no higher than 70-80 degrees max. As for PBO and Bios settings i have no clue which to turn on or change, motherboard is a msi b550 tomahawk.

Under AMD overclocking in the bios. Do a run with PBO limits disabled. There are some eco modes too, try a low watt one if you struggle with the next bit.

For undervolting the easy way, use curve optimiser. Set a negative all core value of - 5 and see if it runs without crashing. You can adjust this to 30 but it may or may not run. Try increments of 5. Plenty of articles on the net that discusses this. You can tweak per core.

Install Hwinfo to get some info on what the chip is doing. Boost, temps, voltages. You can upload some pics while the chip is under load.

You could try remounting the block. Could be a contact issue.

the rad isnt too hot. In ryzen master i have PPT, TDC and EDC all at stock so 1000, 140, 220 respectively. I have peak core voltage at 1.2 volts and running at 4.2ghz. idles at high 30s but still get 85 in cinebench r 20 and r 23

Lower the EDC value. The other day I asked a forum member what he'd set for EDC with a 5800X and he said 90.

I know when I played with a 3700X, setting EDC to 88 gave the best temp-to-performance.

what does it mean when in ryzen master it shows all ppt, edc and tdc all say 100% usage when running cinebench? does this mean i have to lower their values or increase them?

You can typically lower EDC while retaining the same performance (sometimes seeing an improvement depending on the temperature). What I did was lower it, run two Cinebench tests, take note of score and temps, and then repeat with a different EDC setting, to find the sweet spot. i.e. why have a higher value producing more heat if it results in the same scores you get with a lower value.

This is basically an aspect of undervolting on Ryzen, in addition to what @The Asgard suggested with negative offsets.

Try one thing at a time. How will you know what has had a good effect on temps, if you also change core voltage and other stuff at the same time. Start testing, and start providing more feedback based on that, otherwise this thread will be pointless.
