ok so the problem is that a friend has windows 8.1 and wants to upgrade to windows 10, but when he tried to update the OS he got asked for the windows 8.1 key, which he doesnt have, so he is still on windows 8, he bought a windoes 10 key, but we dont know where to redeem it, we tried in a couple of places like adding a new key in the control panel and a couple of things more, but none of them worked, is there a guide somewhere to redeem the code, or somewhere specifically, like microsoft page or something that we must do before that, the main problem is that he doesnt know anything about computers and im really far away, so i dont really know what he did try and what he didnt, so can someone tell me some kind of guide to redeem the windows 10 key that he bought?

No you just need to download the Windows 10 ISO and then enter the key on install.
