I'm stumped...

Symptoms: 1) in win xp 32, windows and most programs load too slow for a computer of this spec. During some games (like WoW) explorer.exe will use 30-40% of the CPU for a few seconds every 30 secs or so causing the game to freeze for a bit. I have dual screens so I can have task manager open and visible during games.
If I end task explorer.exe it stops pausing.

2) Win XP 64 basically doesnt work. Its installed on a seperate drive to win 32 and when I boot into it and get past the login screen, it shows the default win 64 wallpaper, loads the usual processes like explorer but doesnt show the desktop icons or allow me to do anything except ctrl+alt+del to task manager...which crashes when I try to manually load a process :/ Oddly it did load the desktop properly once after a format and 10 mins of loading after login, but once I installed gfx drivers and rebooted It just stopped doing anything after login.

Spec:
2 specs really..pretty much upgraded whole system recently but the same problems have been happening on both systems.

original parts - AMD64 3200+, Asus K8V, radeon 9800pro, 2x 512mb PC3200, Antec truepower 430W PSU, 2x Maxtor IDE 120gig 8mb cache, 1x maxtor sata 250gig.

new parts - AMD64 X2 4400+, DFI lanparty NF4 skt939, radeon x850xt, x2 1gig pc3200, hiper 580w PSU, same HDDs.

The reason i'm totally stumped now is because the win 32 problem still occurs after a format...the win 64 bit problem on both the IDE HDDs...and hardware upgrade made no difference, so i'm not even sure this post is in the right folder! is it a hardware or software problem?!!

I know there wont be an easy answer but any input would be appreciated..i'm getting desprate :o Just want a nice stable computer :(

Thanks for reading..

ok

are you using an xp service pack on the 32bit one?

should slipstream sp2 into your disc....

www.nliteos.com (this tool can do it for you)

sounds like you're formatting and getting viruses off the net straight away because there's no sp installed..

I have SP2 on a seperate CD and i dont connect the network cable untill that and AV/firewall are installed. I'll try slipstreaming SP 2 into the disk anyway since i'm going to reinstall win 32 again this evening...see if it starts buggering up at a certain point after format or something.
