I am looking to get a new tower in the next few weeks. The thing is I used to know a lot about PC hardware back in the days when AGP8x was as l33t as it got! I'm kinda up to date with it all now but am concerned I will order components that don't go together.

I only need a tower as I have a good monitor, speakers, etc. I will need to get an OS though as I am still using "God's" copy of XP if you get my drift...

I am looking to spend up to £1000. I could go higher but really don't want to as I am convinced I don't need to. I want this rig for gaming though and am really upgrading because of the imminent release of Arma2 and OFP2. So I want this rig to run those games well.

I would appreciate some builds. thx guys.

My effort, over I know :)

This is what I bought a couple of weeks ago, with a moniter, keybaord, mouse, etc.

Knock the monitor and a couple of other bits off, and you should be able to squeeze an i7 920 Nehalem CPU in there and a mobo and RAm to go with it I imagine....

that's your baseline kids - if you can't spec a machine, sans monitor, than won't tank my one into next week, you've failed ;)

hey thanks guys. Some nice builds going on here. I want the rig to be able to swallow up arma2/ofp2 on high settings etc so am thinking of going for the 4890 card over the 260 as I could get another one at a later date and have 2gb vid mem if I ever felt the need. Would that be possible with those builds though?

I think i7 is def the way I want to go too. Am really impressed that you guys managed to spec these i7 builds for the £1000 mark. I was really struggling to find the components over the weekend without KOing my wallet.

yep, you can definitely add another 4890 in the future if you want no.
but you're not gonna need that any time soon. :D

Yeah I tend to convince myself I need more than what I really do whenever I upgrade. From what I have read, the 4890 is the card to go for. I was considering a 4870x2 though but I guess there is no point going for that now the 4890 is out.

I am thinking that Kennysevenfold's build is the one atm. I just get a "feeling" about it lol!

I forgot to ask about a sound card. Will the onboard realtek audio on this mobo be any good? I have a very old pci sound blaster 5.1 card I could use if not.

Also, will I need to worry about further fans etc for cooling purposes? This is in ref to kennysevenfold's build.

The antec 300 should move more than enough air with just the stock fans.

As for the sound card, the onboard sound on the x58 is pretty good. Definitely not up to discrete card standards yet, but it is better than it was few years ago. As for the sound blaster 5.1, if its quite old It won't work with Vista. I think some guys made drivers that would work, but creative shut them down pretty quick.

if it's an audigy then it's worth it.
otherwise the integrated one will be better.
nevertheless, it should work with vista, using kx drivers.

Nah it's not an audigy. I'm sure the on board realtek sound will be great. I will be using Sennheiser earphones most of the time when gaming anyway.

I'm pretty close to hitting that buy button then! Only prob is the antec case is currently out of stock :(

I have one last question for you guys regarding this build. I am not a big overclocker and don't plan on overclocking the i7. Is it still going to be the cpu to go for with this in mind or should I consider a faster dual core? Thx.
