hey guys,

rite firsts first... i need help and advice with a lot! i mean a lot!

so xmas is coming up and i have a lot to buy (sister in law pc upgrade/prezzies for family etc..) and also for myself :D :P

now im still looking at the HAF x/gtx480SLI/watercooling

and i need some peoples advice on my overclock (i have a feeling its wrong somewhere and i dont want to system to fail on me!)

heres my system spec atm :

i5 760 @4ghz
msi p55 GD80
corsair xms3 2x4gb 1600mhz
antec kuhler 620 cooler
asus gtx480 (refrence design)
antec true power 750w
seagate barrcuda 1TB 32mb cache
coolermaster cm690 ii lite

so heres my settings from cpu-z

CPU:
core voltage 1.25V
core speed 4000.MHz
multiplier x 21.0
bus speed 190.5 MHz
QPI link 3048.5 MHz

Memory:
NB frequency 3048 MHz
DRAM frequency 762 MHz
9-9-9-24

dose that seem rite for a overclock ??

with less than 10mins on intel burn test it got up to 80 degrees, i should lower my overclock ??
also my gtx480 at standard speeds reaches 80 degrees in games:eek:

now about the HAF X.. as im getting really high temps with my system, should i invest in this case as its got great air cooling and as i have a Fermi card ??

another question for the HAF X users, if you remove the HDD cage, could a 240 rad fit in there ??

now about GTX480SLI.. im not able to fully max out bf3 (properly not skyrim either) or even begin to overclock my 480 as it reaches 80 degrees on standard speeds! so im thinking of picking up a second 480 for SLI if i can get them cool. also how much improvement do you get with a second 480 ?? is it worth the money ??

now about watercooling.. as i have a fermi card that gets extremely HOT! as well as my cpu reaching high temps, should i invest in watercooling these with a custom loop ? or even if i went form my cooler to a EK kit first then build the loop larger as i go ?? if i do get 480SLI and watercool them with my cpu, will i get 1GHz out of each card or am i dreaming again ??

any help or advice appreciated!

sorry for such a large list but i cant seem to get my head round it and my best bet is to ask you guys! :D

cheers fellas

Hi
Yes your CPUz looks fine
Your CPU temp is a little high, but IBT is the toughest thing out there, I expect it reaches these temps within about 30secs to be fair. You could maybe try reseating the cooler to ensure its on correct, reapply TIM if you have any spare
The GPU temp is about right, theyre hot cards, and thats not even that hot, GPUs wont start complaining til theyre in 3 figures
Its upto you, but the 690 is a decent case anyway
Definitely do not attempt to run 480SLi on air, thats my opinion, if you feel you need the boost then Id seriously consider the WCing youre looking at. You may want to just try turn down a couple settings and wait for the next series of cards, Kepler
You should be able to get near to 1GHz Id say

i think it will be wise to reduce the overclock tho, simply because the temps.

are the keplars going to be big increases in performance, as i would rather pick up another 480 than selling mine and splashing loads of cash for an extra 8 fps :/

or i mite wait in till the new range is released and then get a couple of 580's second hand :D not sure yet tho, depends on prices.

im going to get a HAF X for the pure fact that its bigger, will never have to get a bigger case, can take a 360 rad and it cools amazingly :D

do the 580's get toasty like the 480's and whats the noise like between them ??

Keplers reportedly 20% quicker, though til its released that could be purely aspirational
As I say the danger of getting a 2nd 480, on air, is they will just warm each other up no end, if you think its running hot now just wait n see, as they run hot the fans have to spin more to try and keep them cool which increases noise output too. In my last build I had Xfired 4890s for quite a while and thought they were really loud, when I upgraded earlier in the year (to a 560Ti) I sold one 4890 first, as soon as I took it out the noise dropped massively. I'll never run dual cards on air again (now waters another thing :D)
The 580s are meant to be a lot quieter and cooler than the 480s yes, I'm getting one for my new build now

yeah ive seen your build log :D

hmmm im tempted to get a couple of 580s when they reduce in price :)

so if i got a haf x with a 360 rad at top and somehow mounted a 240 at the bottom, that will do fine for 580's sli and my i5 760 ??

great! :D as it would be my first time watercooling (properly!) would the EK h30 HF 360 kit be ideal then i can add the 580's and another rad in the future

I would think so but I'd recommend at the time you ask in the watercooling forum, my new build is my first go too so I'm by no means any watercooling expert

ive read up about the EK kits, and i think for a first time watercooler, its a good way to go as it has everything you need, then you can add to the loop in the future to improve it :)

If you need help with watercooling, I have written a guide on how to watercool your CPU (in my sig :)). I can also help you with the GPU if you need :)
