Need help with a new £1000 budget build

It works out cheaper to buy the 500GB Samsung Evo SSD rather than 2 x 250GB Evo SSD's :)

The Gigabyte G1 sniper is a good gaming motherboard, although the colour scheme is green/black. A more neutral choice would be the Gigabyte Z87X-SLI.

If you intend on crossfiring the 290 down the road then an 850W psu would be a safer choice. The Seasonic M12II Evo comes in an 850W version.

You could save money on the cooler by going for an air cooler such as the Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure edition. It will easily cope with an i5.

Here are the above items....

The cooler is fine

As for motherboards the 2 Gigabyte boards will do you fine and as they're Gigabyte you'll get UK RMA should anything go wrong.

Or you could go for the lesser variant of the one you'd selected. As far as I can tell the differences are fairly minimal

Hi again Paolo,

Thought I'd play a bit more with this, and make a kind of Frankenstein from what you proposed and Ex-Ray Ted and Lee recommended, along with a couple of bits and bobs from me. :D

1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £67.99

1 x Samsung SE-S208DB/TSBS External Slimline 8x DVD-RW (TV Connect) - Black £21.98
3 x Aerocool DS Edition Fan - Red - 140mm £13.99 (£41.97)
1 x NZXT CB-LED10-WT 12x White LED Sleeve - 1m £9.98
1 x Silverstone SST-FF142B Magnetic Fan Filter - 320x155mm £5.99
Total : £1,318.90 (includes shipping : £11.75).

16GB RAM for your editing needs.

Faster, aesthetically matching GPU.

3 quality red LED fans, together with white NZXT sleeve lighting instead of red, so that you get a subtler red glow from the fans but can still make out the other colours. Two 140's for the front and one 140 for the rear.

Good air cooler with red LED fan. Heatsink looks good in black. The max CPU cooler height for the case is 170mm, so it just about fits at 164mm. Review - http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/EVGA-Superclock-CPU-Cooler-Review/1336/8

PSU is non-modular but again, I don't see it being a problem given it and the cables will be hidden at the back of the case.

No idea why I didn't check the single 500GB one first, thanks for pointing that out.

I like the Sniper board but the colour does rule it out, as silly as that seems. The other one would be fine though.

I highly doubt I'd crossfire, if I did it would be a much further down the line so I'd probably wait till then to upgrade the PSU to handle the extra requirements.

I'll have a think over water vs air coolers. The more I think about it the more I think I may try a little overclocking in which case I imagine the water ones to be a better choice.

Cheers for this. I think I'll start with 8GB Ram then if I think I need more or can afford it in a month or two I'd just double up again. Gaming will be my main use at the moment anyway.

I'll have a think about the fans and rope, I agree it could be too red if it's all giving out the same colour glow.

Wait for the Z97 chipset board, they only 10 days away.

But grab a OEM 4670K today - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-472-IN

What's main new features on the new mobos? I've seen you mention them in other threads so was wondering if it was worth waiting. I take it they'll be models at various price ranges, would the one around mine be much better than the ones mentioned above?

I don't mind waiting another 10 days if it's really worth it.

Will order at least the CPU tonight while it's that that price, thanks.

I see there's also a new batch of Intel CPU's on the way, is it worth just waiting till both them and the Z97's are out?

Or does the fact I'm likely to very little to no overclocking mean I'm fine with the current set of CPUs?

Thanks for the advice.

Early adopters usually get bent over and wallet-raped. It might be an idea to wait just so you can see if the prices of existing kit drops in response to the new stuff appearing

Well certainly wait for Z97 boards as they are now days away and the pricing that was accidentally slipped out was ok.

But maybe grab one of the OEM CPU's on today special deal as thats a good price.

Yea I think that's what I'll do. Order all of the other stuff including the CPU on offer today then pick up one of the Z97s when they come out. I was determined to have it up and running this week but after 7 years of the same set up what's a few more days.

Thanks a lot for all the help.

Honestly, this is the best peice of advice...

the MSI Z87-G43 Gaming Series Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard dosent really have great sound, the new mobos are only a week or so away and the new CPU will follow a week or two afterwards.

IF you cant wait, I would seriously reccomended ditching the MSI board and getting a G1 sniper, they have way way better sound with the creative sound blaster chip, you could get the mobo/cpu now and sell it to upgrade when the new ones come, although that would seem pointless wasting £...

your call.

Didn't get back to this last night after I posted and the deal on the above MOBO has ended now so I think I'm going to go with one of these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Maximus VII Ranger Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £129.95
1 x Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z97 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £128.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £119.99
1 x MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard **MSI Cashback** £114.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
Total : £613.46 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Quite a spread in price there, are either of the Asus or Sniper worth the extra money or would one of the Gaming 5 (or 3) ones be better value for money for what I'll be using it for?

Looking to order the system asap now they're out.

Thanks in advance.

The Z97X-Gaming 3 has a free Corsair headset.

The Sniper has the best sound chip and Audio section.

Aye I saw the free headset, not all the bothered about it.

Think I've narrowed it down to one of these 3, can't really split them. The Asus one has a few extra features like the Keybot one but is £10 more and doesn't have SATA Express. The MSI doesn't have SATA Express either but does have M.2, is already the cheapest and has a money back offer. The Gigabyte has both SATA Express and M.2 but not much else over the other two.

Can anyone think of anything that could swing it in one boards direction over the other 2 or is it really about personal preference at this point?

You should add the Sniper to your list. If it is as good as the Z87 version then it's a no brainer. Plus you get a 4 year warranty.

I looked at it but it doesn't have M.2 or SATA Express which were two of the big new features on this lot of MOBOs, seems silly to have waited then get one without either.

Was reading this review of a few of the boards, they don't seem too hot on the Sniper.

Right, pretty much decided on everything now.

I'm very tempted by the Asus Maximus VII Ranger mobo but think with the cashback offer the MSI is worth it. Any final suggestions on improvements or things I've missed off, replacement fans for example, are welcome.

Just a memory and fan adaptor suggestion.

No real difference between 2133 and 2400MHz, and it's on offer.

I've seen plenty of people say the stock fans on the Carbide 540 Air are loud. 7v fan adaptor would be a cheap way of fixing that, if you find them loud too. It would avoid cable clutter on the motherboard too.
