hi i have a metal gear box usb type thing (like an icybox) and i just bought a new 250gb hdd to put in it as replacement for the 80gb i had before. anyway after doing so and turning on the hdd enclosure osx says its unreadable and asks to initialize it. however the program it uses 'disk utility' freezes whenever i try to format or partition the space..

is there any other program i can use to format the hdd to a mac osx format? or can anyone offer any other advice?

thanks

i left it for a few minutes but the hdd isnt showing any activity so i cant tell if its just frozen completely..? i have a windows laptop i could use to format it if that might help?

the hdd is brand new so im sure its fine.

are there any other formatting programs i could use?

Try booting in to the OS X dvd and use Disk utility from there.

This way you are not using your regular HDD, and you shouldn't have an issue with freezing.

Failing that possibly you could try a terminal command to erase the HDD (assuming OS X can detect it), but I would only try that if your confident enough to use the terminal

great suggest ill give it a try
