I know I'm owed a fair bit from jobs in the previous couple of years and yet I have no idea how I'm supposed to go about collecting my tax back.

All I can gather from the HM Revenue site is that I need to go into the local offices with a p60/p45, but I'm fairly sure I have one of those from each job.

Does that mean I need to collect some sort of form from each one of my previous jobs or should I just take in one and they can get the rest of my personal details from that?

It's all a little confusing for me :s

Cheers :)

Do you know why you were overcharged tax in your previous jobs? What makes you think you are due a refund?

You should get a P60 each tax year 06/04 - 05/04 from whatever employer you are with at 05/04. You should have P45's from each employer you have left.

Just get all of them together and I would also try and find all your payslips as well. You should also have coding notice information (tax code) which would be handy. Once you have got all that together go to your nearest tax office and act stupid and hopefully they will be forthcoming with help.

I'm a student and haven't earned over £5225 each tax year, however I've only just found out that I'm supposed to fill out a P46 and/or student form saying I'm exempt from tax under that amount.

I'm aware I should have received P60s from each tax year, however I've only managed to get hold of one after a lot of reminders to my current boss. I can't find any details on my previous employer which might be a problem, assuming I need the forms from each employer?

Shouldn't you have sorted all your tax stuff out when you started the job, or at the end of the tax year? It might be a bit difficult to get previous years overpayments back.

Were you taxed with every paypacket? The personal allowance (the £5225) varies from year to year due to inflation so this could be a range of figures.

What you need to do is look at how much you earned over the tax periods you're talking about and then see how much tax you paid. Look at online calculators to see how much you should have paid and then work out the difference to see how much you're owed.

Best bet after that is to ring HMRC and ask them. Try and have details for each employer to hand too. E.g. During the tax year of 06/07 Fred Ltd paid me £xxxx and Bob Ltd paid me £xxxx. Then in 07/08 tax year, etc. If you break it down for them it'll be much more useful.

My current boss is a bit of a mess with paper work and I wasn't aware I could get tax back until recently (naivety for you).

I think I'm going to pop down with as much of the necessary paper work and see what they can do for me.

I got my Tax Rebate Form from the Union i am in at work (Unison). They actually have it on there website which you just fill in regardless. I recently filled a tax rebate form in for when i was working and at college and some of the follow up questions i was receiving was stupid.
Was something like "Where was you working between Feb02 and Nov05. If you where unemployed state any benefits you where claiming". was a bit... considering i was like 14-16 still in high school then i started college aswell. i would like to know what benefits i would have been claiming.

Call 0845 3021456 , you need your tax reference number (should be on your wage slip or ask your employer for it), NI number and staff number if you got one.
Explain to person that answers your call whats going on and you'll be asked (i was) to send them your P60 for each year that you due a rebate. Then they'll either send you cheque or pay money to your bank if you give them your bank details.
Hope that helps.
