Need Help with choosing a new PC!

Hello there everyone!

I'm looking to buy a new system and my budget would be just under £1000.00 but if it came to it I could add a bit more if it was worth it. I really just want the best rig for what I'm paying but it seems there are a lot of websites out there, and the prices wildly fluctuate, etc.

Basicly I'm looking for a new gaming machine that will be able to tear up anything I throw at it, something with a DX10 graphics card would be great so I can play Crysis when it comes out at full res. The more powerful the better, and as I said gaming is my biggest priority!

I wont be building it myself so I am looking for a PC that is already premade etc. I also already have a pretty good 20" sony monitor so it's just the machine itself I'll be buying.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I guess it's worth looking at the OcUK pre made systems, such as:-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-042-OK&groupid=43&catid=781&subcat=

They are built from decent components and come pre overclocked. I'd always suggest trying to build a system yourself though, you get exactly what you want, and it's not that difficult.

There is plenty of info on these forums, and many here would be willing to help with a spec and any questions you have pre, and during the build.

I built the spec in my sig recently for a fair bit under your budget, and i'm very happy with the performance. If you could spec somthing similar but manage to squeeze a 8800 GTX in, you'd be very happy with the result i'm sure. :D

Hey Gamblers Luck and welcome to the forums!

Just a few more questions before getting started on a spec/prebuild system ( I would recommend learning how to build one for best money/performance ratio.

Are you looking for a good overclock on this machine ( recommended )
Do you need an OS/which OS?
What resolution to you normally play at and what resolution would you look to be looking at in the future if you bought a new monitor?

I would recommend you build your own PC, it is well worth it and will save you money in the long run.

Yup I would definately like to overclock the machine, to give it that extra bump.

As for an OS I was leaning toward XP pro because of the Vista issues (I work in Currys. lol). However I know that I'll need vista if I want to play certain games in the future, ie being able to play with gamers from Xbox360 and PC, I will more than likely decide on Home Premium unless I can get around that.

My current Monitor is the Sony SDM-HS75P which has a DVI in. The max res I get with that is 1280x1024 I believe, although most games I'm running at 1024x768. Not sure what rez if I was running a new monitor however I do have a 32" Samsung LCD I could use as well which is HD ready (The samsung LE32R73BD ), this can display up to 1366 x 768.

As for the buy it / make it thing. I could try and make it but of course becuase of the "value" of this product I'd be worried of mucking it up! My most experience with a pc is changing Ram, and upgrading my Graphics card. but installing a new pc, installing a motherboard to a case and installing the software and then making it work right is a daunting task ^ ^.

P.S. that GPU Will the 3rd mentioned is definately the sort of thing I want in my pc, looks red hot!

As far as XP/Vista goes, i've not had any real problems using Vista. I mainly use my pc for gaming, and the recent drivers for my 8800 GTS seem fine. Games maybe will run a bit better in XP right now compared to Vista, but with spending money on a pc I just figured it'd be best to go for Vista in the long run.

The spec Will has up now looks good, altho it's missing a mobo? You could maybe cut it down to 1 HDD, add motherboard and OS, and you'd come in just over budget.

I'd strongly recommend building your own, if you follow the advice on these forums, you'll be fine.

Sorry must be having pre-exam nerves  my PC specs are sub-par

That list you've made will, is there anything else there I'm gonna need, ie sound card, extra cooling, cables etc? I'm really dubious about making a PC myself. Only other thing I was gonna ask was is that power supply gonna be powerful enough since I've heard some people say it need to be like 800-1000w sometimes (although that probably for a SLI or crossfire setup IMHO)

nice overclocking gaming setup here the best mobo imo not just because i have one :D although the ds3p is a great board but evgas support rocks and the features on this board are excellent raid/sli/bios

this cpu would be same as e6600 when clocked and would easly do 3.2 ghz

Stinka, the 620W PSU is overkill. Both listed specs are very good except I would get the E6600 over the E6420 and drop the 620W for the 520W Corsair PSU.

i chose that psu for future proofing

and whats the diff between e6600 and e6420 when clocked at 3.2 ?

btw you only get a gts with hp7909's spec ^^ ;)

I would chose the E6600 over the E6420 because of the 9x multiplyer rather than the 8x which gives more headroom for ocing.

The 520W corsair can run SLI'd 8800's I beleive. Don't see the need for more.

no thats the 620w mate

agreed about the multi but at 3.2 it wont bottle neck anything so imho a clocked e6420 would be perfect for op's gaming needs and alow purchase of superior psu allowing future upgrade to dual 8800's on the motherboard i speced

Sorry yes, indeed you are right. Had to go look that up.

Anyway, here is what I would spec. A little bit overbudget but it will clock well + its a GTX.

As OP posted he would want to run Crysis at max settings. After seeing the trailer posted in the games section a few days ago I fail to see this happening at a £1000 budget.

If you really want that its best off waiting for it to be released.
