I'm looking to build a new gaming rig for the first time in about 10 years so need help as everything has changed so much since my last build.

It will be used for mainly all the latest FPS games and would like to run at 4k if possible. Ideally would like it to come in at around 1.5k including monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I would like your thoughts and suggestions on the basket I have started below. As you can see the way I am going is not gonna leave me much for the monitor etc.

Is it any good, is it too much or too little for my needs, is there a more cost effective set-up I should be looking at, do I not have enough budget for 4k?

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,288.23 (includes shipping: £12.30)

Ditch the Intel processor and get a 3600 for less than half the price, including motherboard., it is more than powerful enough for 4K gaming.

For 4K you need more GPU horsepower, so I would put more money towards a powerful GPU like 5700XT/GTX 2070/2080.

If not a more powerful GPU, you can put that cash towards a decent 4K monitor.

Thanks for the advice, so my basket now looks like this, minus the monitor etc...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,120.13 (includes shipping: £13.20)

I think with the budget left I should be able to get a decent monitor, any suggestions in that department would also be welcome.

Let me know if there are any better options to the items I have picked.

Many thanks in advance.

I would forget about 4K and look at 1440p instead. The RX 5700XT isn't a 4K gpu so you would have to lower settings quite a lot on certain games. Also you mention playing 1st person shooters so a high refresh rate will feel a lot smoother.

Added a cpu cooler but it is optional. Stock cooler on the 3600X is pretty decent.

Free games and xbox game pass for pc with the 3600X and 5700XT.

Something like the below is what I would do. Case is personal pref of course.

You could get away with a 550W psu but a 650W covers you for pretty much any single gpu/cpu setup.

That depends upon the game and the quality settings required.

Or you could play at 1440p and not have to drop any settings. Plus the fact a 5700XT is going to need replacing sooner if you are playing at 4K.

Try playing something like Metro Exodus at 4K and you are looking at 34fps on High settings. The op plays 1st person shooters so a high refresh rate will benefit more than a higher resolution.

Thanks for the reply, I wanted it to be capable of 4k gaming to future proof the set-up but I guess I could live without it.

Out of interest, if I was to go for a 4k monitor, would the games I ran at 1440p on it look crap?

Also, I see the MB you picked comes up a lot in other threads, is because its good value for money? I wanted one with wifi and thought I would go for the latest chipset.

Don't think you'll need the Cryorig AM4 bracket as long as you avoid the H5 Ultimate and stick with the H5 Universal. If you like FPS games, 1080p or 1440p is where it's at.

The B450 Pro Carbon has Wifi if you need it. The X570 chipset has nothing you appear to need, and would just add more cost to all the other good stuff Lee has crammed nicely into a 1.5K budget. Even if you were to say well make it 1.6K there are other things I'd "upgrade" first, such as 3600x to 3700X. You also still need a keyboard and mouse, I think you said.
