Firstly, i hope this doesnt breach any forum rules.

Ok, i won an auction on a well known site were the payment method was other. I then received an email supposedly from the auction site giving details of how to pay safely with Western Union, at which point alarm bells rang loud and a quick look at the message source showed the email had come through yahoo servers and therefore not legit.

After a bit of digging, turns out its a user account which has been hi-jacked and being used for fraud. I have contacted the site directly and the listing has now been removed and their account suspended. Now the fun bit ;) I want to wind this guy up :p Have emailed him a bit today and he's taken the bait lol ... our correspondence so far ...

Wouldnt worry about it mate, hes probably got 20+ people on the go at once, your wasting your time as much as his, which he does professionally so not really wasting his time lol.

I'm sure nobody on these forums would be fooled by such a scam, but just to let others know and to add extra info to the thread, heres a copy of the spoofed payment request from the auction site.

• Complete your eBay transaction in 5 easy steps:

1. eBay accepts the transaction and offers purchase protection to the buyer (if the transaction is declined, no further action is required from either the buyer or the seller);
2. The buyer sends payment and the seller receives it. After the payment was received, the seller must notify eBay. Buyer will send the payment details directly to the seller email address. The seller has three business days to send the buyer and eBay the tracking number of the shipment. If no tracking number is provided, a full refund is immediately sent to the buyer;
3. Buyer receives the merchandise and has five days to inspect it. If it is complete and as described, the buyer should accept the merchandise. If he refuses the merchandise, the buyer must ship the merchandise back to the seller within three business days.
4. After the inspection period is over, the buyer must contact eBay with the result of the inspection. If the buyer refuses the merchandise, the refund will be sent to the buyer after the tracking number for the returned shipment is verified.

• Payment must be sent by Western Union Wire Transfer to:
Seller name:
D*******u T****s
Seller address:
33 ****** WALK,N** 6**, LONDON,United Kingdom
• Next step to be taken: The buyer must send the payment to the seller
It is recommended to send the payment as soon as possible, because your purchase protection is valid for 30 days only. Sending the payment by any other method of payment will void this transaction and your right to refund.
• Payment instructions:

To submit the payment with Western Union Money Transfer, you have 2 options:

1. Pay for the transfer with cash at a local Western Union agent. Click here to locate the agents in your area http://www.westernunion.com/info/agentInquiryIntl.asp. Go to one of them and send the payment to the verified name of the seller, available in USA.
2. If you are now in the USA and need to use a credit/debit card (Visa or MasterCard), call 1-800-CALL-CASH and make the payment to the verified name of the seller. An additional fee will be charged on most cards because this transaction will be considered a cash advance on your card.
Western Union Money Transfer is the only service that has ultimate authentication of the identity of the receiver of funds. Several IDs and utility bills are required before the funds are paid. Therefore, no one else but your seller can pick up the money. Your payments cannot be lost in the mail, like money orders or checks.
However, Western Union Money Transfer is designed mainly for sending cash to friends and family in need, so telling them you are sending the money to an eBay seller will prevent your money transfer to go through and you will be unable to complete this transaction.

Once the payment was sent, email the seller the following information:
1. 10 digit MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number):
2. Exact sender's name on file with Western Union:
3. Your street address on file with Western Union:
4. City and country where you sent the money from:
5. Amount sent:

Then wait for the confirmation the payment was received. Within 3 business days, you will receive the tracking number for your merchandise.

Purchase protection and refund:
Currently, this seller has a US $5,000.00 deposit in an eBay managed purchase protection account.
Transactions with this eBay seller are covered by purchase protection against fraud and description errors. For your safety, this account was locked today, for 90 days time period. The seller is unable to withdraw any money from it, within this period.
Should you need a refund for this transaction, the insured amount will be taken from the seller's purchase protection account and sent to you. The refund is sent to your bank account, or by check or money order. The way you are refunded is at your choice. You have 90 days from the above verification date to request a refund. Refund requests are processed within 3 days.
The account is managed by eBay's SquareTrade center. This transaction is supervised by eBay's SafeHarbor team.

• Conditions to be met before you may ask for a refund:
Here are the situations suitable for a refund request:
1. If the item doesn't arrive and/or the seller stops communications after the payment was received;
2. If the merchandise you receive has different specifications than the ones you agreed on;
3. If your merchandise arrives in a much longer period than the one you agreed on (more than 15 days from the payment clearance day);
For cases 2. and 3. you have to send back the merchandise to the seller prior to ask for your refund. If you did not pay the seller by payment method required by us, your refund request will be declined.

• Important Usage Guidelines:
1. The contact information should only be used for resolving matters related to eBay. Any other use is strictly prohibited.
2. This transaction is protected by eBay services such as insurance, feedback and dispute resolution.
3. You may buy and sell with confidence in all transactions with this eBay member.
4. Should you need to dispute this transaction, keep the transaction number at hand when contacting eBay. Any complaints must be filed within 90 days from the verification date.

This e-mail message was sent to you from eBay SafeHarbor team, with the full support of the SquareTrade center.
As outlined in our User Agreement, eBay will periodically send you information about site changes and enhancements. Visit our Privacy Policy and User Agreement if you have any questions.

You have two, tried and tested options.

1) Get some money out of him in order to 'secure the transfer'

2) Send him a box full of bricks, brocken PCs, dog poo and all other tat and get him to pay for shipping.

Is Nigeria involved by any chance?

Only problem is i'm the buyer so not sending him anything :(

Not been mentioned anyway lol. It was a normal auction account that was hijacked by this guy, so not sure were he's *really* from.

Ask him if he has any similar (related) items. Prefferebly expensive to get his hopes up even more.

i.e. if you bought a graphics card, ask if he has any 30" tft's for sale while your at it...

This will buy you some time to think of something cruel to do.

Nothing personal - but if the Freewebs thread was deleted (which I believe it was), then this should be as well.

Consistency, and all of that.

Nice :) I was actually buying a treadmill cause got the fitness bug just now, think i'll ask about other exercise equipment to buy some time lol. Think i'll wait til monday before asking tho, might look suspect if i asked to quickly.

I remember one auction on ebay, it was for a laptop, dirt cheap and the guy had one negative feedback. This screamed scam so i contacted the buyer who left the negative feedback and she said that she bought the same 'laptop' but never recieved it. Anyway i had a long email conversation with the scammer and he wouldnt let me come and pick it up for stupid reasons like 'i'm busy' so i sent all the emails to ebay and reported him. I then emailed him telling him what i'd done and i got a big **** OFF!! in reply and next day his account was gone :D

As i said at the start of the opening post, i wasnt sure if this type of post would be allowed. So i would understand if the mods thought it neccessary to delete the thread :(

Reaching out on a limb here, but if you really want to have some fun, why don't you contact the Police? ;)

I have thought from the start that this should be a police matter as its fraud. But the email i received from eBay indicated that the removal of the listing was the end of the matter and they would not provide any further information due to privacy concerns.

Suppose i could hand it directly to the police but would it be something they want to be bothered with? Also, there's a strong chance the fake seller isn't in this country.

You can always ask him if it would be possible to send it to your friend/family/pet in Nigeria, after which you will send payment :D

Some follow up emails lol ...

Hi,

Thanks for the tip to save on the charges. On the point of saving
money, i noticed your payment address is in London, i'll be in London
on the 19th August. I could collect and save you the postage costs and
pay you cash to save on the fees.

Hope this will be ok as it will save us both money.

Can you let me know before monday if this is ok?

Thanks again.
