Need help with my overclock - Q6600 at 3.4Ghz

I've been trying to get my Q6600 up to 3.4Ghz for a few days now, but I've had no luck. It starts up alright, and I can play games for hours, but it's unstable with simple things like Firefox and MSN. Also, can run Large FFTs in Prime95 for hours with no problems, but running Small FFTs causes it to either freeze up completely, or restart the computer. Temperature isn't going above 65C, so I'm fairly sure it isn't that.

Here is a list of my hardware, and everything I've done so far:

Asus P5NT-WS
4GB (2x2GB) Geil Black Dragon 1066
Q6600 G0 stepping, VID: 1.2375
2x Zotac 9800GT AMP! Edition (Running in SLi)
Sunbeam Core Contact Cooler
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi 5.1 Surround System
650W Coolermaster PSU

FSB (QDR): 1512
MEM (DDR): 1008
9x Multiplier
Everything in the CPU section disabled except Virtualization Technology and Execute Disable Bit.

Vcore Voltage: 1.43125V (1.36V after drop)
Memory Voltage: 2.300V
NB Core Voltage: 1.55V
SB Core Voltage: 1.550V
NB<->SB HT Voltage: 1.50V
CPU VTT Voltage: 1.50
SB Standby Voltage: 1.50

All Spread Spectrum Control options disabled
All memory timings at default
LDT Frequency: 4x
SLi Broadcast Aperture: Auto
Nvidia GPU Ex: Enabled
PCIEX16_2 Mode: Auto

System Clocks:
NB PCIEX16 Frequency: 135
SB PCIEX16 Frequency: 135
SPP<->MCP Ref Clock, MHz: Auto

Anyone got any pointers with anything that could help?

Edit: I deleted my original post as i just re-read your post and have seen your memory frequency and timings.

Try lowering the memory frequency via the ram divider some more and see if you can get your system stable. I have to run my memory 200Mhz below default to keep my system stable. If necessary you could also try slackening the memory timings.

Once you get the sytem stable again - you can work at trying to bring your memory back up to speed.

I prefer losing a bit of memory speed and having a large overclock - i feel the gains are better.

I lowered the DDR rating to 756, and its made it through test 1 on Prime95 without restarting or freezing, on all 4 cores! Previously, it froze or restarted as soon as Prime95 was started.

Just need to wait a few hours an see if works now, thanks a lot :)

Ah, another problem. It was stable in Prime95 for about 5 hours, and I turned it off while I went to do something else. Now it won't turn on first time. If I turn it on, it just comes up with a black screen, but if I press the reset button then, it boots normalls. Any ideas?

Argh, still stable in Prime95, but still won't boot properly.

Might have to give it up and go a bit lower, not comfortable with raising the voltages any more really.

Nor would i be looking at your settings. Reduce the memory frequency some more and perhaps some of your timings.

I would change your ram timings if I were you, I had to do soe with mine in order to get a decent overclock (meant to be 4-4-4-12)

Right, I've set my RAM at 6-6-6-18 (Supposed to be 5-5-5-15), and it's working now!

Time to start messing about with the voltages some more, get them down a bit. What would you guys recommend reducing?

Great! - let us know how you get on.

Edit: You'll have to experimnet with the voltages - we would just be guessing.

But, I would try dropping all your voltages to default bar your vCore and memory voltages and see if it reamains stable. As they are all very high - then stress test.

If it's stable after these voltage changes then i would gradually reduce the vCore until it becomes unstable and then up it to the last known stable setting - then stress test. I would then do the same procedure for the memory - but i wouldn't worry if it had to remain at 2.2v.

I've not managed to get it stable on stock voltages, but I've reduced everything at least a little, and I think I've managed to get it stable, with lower voltages than the ones listed above. Been playing with it for a few days, and I think this is the best I can do with my current level of knowledge and experience.

Thanks for all the help :D
