I have created a new 'canvas'

Settings:

Width: 500pixels
Height: 500pixels
Resolution: 28.346 pixels/cm
Mode: RGB Color

I grab the Text tool, select my area I want to put my text in, I start typing and nothing appears.

The cursor is HUGE and as you can see, there is no text displaying. Size is set to 72pts, tried setting it lower and higher, but makes no difference.

Anyone able to help?

looks like it's just too big. Type something, hit ctrl+a and change the size to 8 or something. Then make sure text colour isn't white, then make sure there isn't a layer above the text layer. You could also try resizing the text box bigger.

print screen your whole window... including character and layer pallete

lol just a thought..
never used PS7 but seems odd the cursor to be that big
is there a way to set everything back to default in the options

Toolbar at the top of the screen. Set the pixel size to something smaller.

Already tried that

and @_lecro_, I uninstalled PS7, reinstalled, same issue, thought it may be something with my PC, and it needed a good clean up so i formatted it and it still same...

Selected the text I types:

Colour set to black:

Font and Font Size:

Try it using a point text feature instead of a box.

Basically, click once with the text tool instead of dragging an area, see if that helps.

Or as said below, try the character palette, the button which looks like a document with bullet points, found on the same toolbar as font selection.

Yeh that's all fine although you're still on size 72.

Open up the character palette and make sure everything is normal in there...

edit: also, a bit stupid... but you haven't hit return a load of times before typing have you?!

My guess is that the baseline's been shifted down a stupid amount. That would explain the mahoosive cursor at 72pt.

EDIT: That's the number next to the "Aa", to the left of the colour swatch, in Stupot's example above, if you didn't know.

Strange, It's resolved...I save all my .psd files, so I opened a .psd file that had the right size text, dragged it over to the new canvas and then started a new line of text, closed everything down, re-opened PS and it now works...Why would this have happened?

Clearly, you had angered the jealous Adobe gods. Had thoughts of installing GIMP crossed your mind? That normally sets them off.

Dragging the original text probably reset the text defaults or something.

I was able to replicate your problem with a baseline shift of -200pt, so I'm sticking with that :p

PS does random things sometimes. When I click Layer Effects it opens up infinite incarnations of the Help page now and then. It also has a habit of failing to recognise keyboard shortcuts.

PS once changed my default fill shortcut to a stupid action..

I say PS did it.. took me a few days to work that one out.

Bloody hell! For years I've been blaming my old Wacom Graphire tablet for that  :D

It does that to me on rare occasions when I just click the background color box.

Also sometimes, my text will appear about 2px tall regardless of what size I've told it to be. Have to restart PS to get rid of that one.

A further also, I have change image and canvas size shortcuts macro'd. Sometimes when using them though, it'll pop up a box asking me if I'd like to clear my settings. Strange as it's not like my macro's have changed.

Ahhh, I thought that was just me! Nice to know.

Originally (in regards to OP) It reminded me of a similar problem I had. I've been using PS for a few years so I knew I was doing everything right. It was after I installed PS on a new OS install. Basically it was fixed by choosing a different layout from the pre-sets. I think I chose essentials, or basic or something.

Strange problem fixed by something that seems unrelated!
