Need help with picture quality

I was using a 280x with a 1080p TV via DVI on the card to HDMI on the tv. Picture was perfect. Now I've got a GTX 970, same cable, same TV and the picture is horrible. I've tried hdmi -> hdmi, I've tried both DVI ports on the card (I and D) but the picture is the same no matter what I do. I've been into the tv settings but nothing I can change in there makes a difference.

Any ideas?

The TV used to detect the res with an on screen popup saying 1920x1080 but now it's popping up saying 1080p@60Hz. I know that's the same thing but the TV is obviously getting some sort of different signal with the 970 than the 280x.

Are you using the same HDMI port as you did before? My TV has 2 HDMI ports, one says DVI, the other STB (set top box I guess). Also maybe the TV needs to be in PC/DVI mode. When you switched cards perhaps this got disabled and you need to turn it on again.

Now you have an Nvidia card you could give Nvidia Cuvid a go. Depending what software you using. I use MediaPortal with LAV Filters.
 
On AMD cards, this could either be because the colour settings aren't set to full rgb. Or if using dvi, there's a checkbox for alternate dvi mode that needs to be unchecked.

I don't know how what the settings are on the Nvidea control panel, but that might give you some clues.
 
Only thing I can think of is display scaling being set wrong somewhere in the nvidia control panel (defaulting to something silly). Running AMD at the moment so I can't check where.
 
Same hdmi port on the tv, same cable, same settings on the tv itself of which there aren't many. I've been through all the scaling options in the nvidia panel and tried different resolutions.
 
Just noticed my TV has a VGA port. Do I bother digging out a VGA cable or is the quality v DVI/HDMI nowhere near as good? I'm on the verge of ordering a 144Hz pc monitor but if the VGA will give me the same picture I had before I don't think I'll bother.
 
Found a VGA cable and DVI adapter. Well The picture is better but the colours are very washed out and text isn't as clear as it used to be.
 
Faffed with the controls in nvidia panel and the tv and vga doesn't look bad at all now. I'll see how it goes over the weekend, if I'm not happy I'll call it a day and look for a new screen. I just can't get dvi or hdmi to play nice with the tv.
