Seems like I signed up to these forums at an ideal time! My flatmates Rover 216 (bubble thing with 4 doors) has just wrecked its gearbox, it works going forwards but when in reverse even the slightest acceleration pops the gearstick out of gear with a "clunk".
She took it to a garage and they have said £1000 for a new gearbox fitted, all inc. This seems like a hell of a lot to me, car can only be worth 2k max!
So, is this a common failure? Would it be worth getting a second hand box from a scrappy? How hard is it to fit one?
