Hi everyone.
I use steam and i've got quite a lot of games on it. I want to do a clean install of my system but i dont want to have to redownload all my games again. Is there a way i can avoid this? Thanks

1) Copy your Steam\steamapps folder to the backup location.

2) Install Steam on the new machine.

3) Copy steamapps folder from the backup location and in to the new Steam folder.

4) Log in with your Steam account. Steam will verify the resource files, and you'll be good to go.

Keep the entire 'Valve' folder on a separate partition from your OS in future.

When you reinstall Windows, you don't need to do anything - even to install Steam. Just run the Steam executable and it takes care of everything for you.

how can i split my steam folder over 2 discs

You can't, your Steam games can only be installed on the Disc the Steam client has been installed, it won't let install elsewhere.

how do i backup my game saves?

That generally depends on the game, some games have their saves in the client folder (which means you will have to go into Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\etc), however most games these days put the saves in the My Documents folder so I would look there first.

Stream installed on a seperate partition is the way to go definitely. As dirtydog said you won't even need to reinstall it. When I first installed Steam on the same partition as my OS and had to reinstall Windows, copying steamapps back didn't work for some reason. TF2 wouldn't load, it gave me some errors. I had to reinstall and download the games again.

This is the only reason why i use steam tbh :P i hate waiting to install games.

isn't there an option in steam to burn your games ? why not do that ?

When installing Steam just choose to install it on your other partition or any non-OS drive. All your games will go there automatically from then on.

You can install individual steam games to a different drive/folder however its not simple and depending on what you want to do varies in complexity...

Simplest method is what I use to run some games from SSD while leaving most games in the steam install on a big old mechanical disc.

What I did:

Partition my SSD into seperate partitions (and hence different drive letters) for each game.

Start the game install but once its done preparing and starting to download abort the download and close steam.

Copy the contents of the game install folder from i.e.

Steam\SteamApps\common\<gamename> to e:\ (don't create a folder called <gamename> on e: just copy the contents of <gamename> straight to e:\

From the run prompt: compmgmt.msc /s

Under disc management right click and use the change drive letters and paths to mount the e:\ disc under the folder Steam\SteamApps\common\<gamename>

Load steam backup and continue as normal...

Using mklink you can do even more complex stuff.
