So the day Far Cry 2 came out I downloaded the 180.42 beta drivers for my 9600GT. All worked fine - everything 100% stable. But when I restarted my PC the desktop was all corrupted - covered with a checkered pattern and the background image/icons were only just visible. The PC was also frozen. I had to boot into safe mode, re-install the drivers, and restart.....then it was OK again. This happened every time I had to restart the PC which, fortunately, wasn't very often. I put it down to the drivers being beta and a bit flaky. Then the 180.43 beta's came out.....same problem.
So today I notice the WHQL 180.xx drivers are available. I assumed this would fix the problem. But it hasn't - still exactly the same problem....have to boot into safe mode and re-install drivers every time I have to restart Windows
The PC is totally stable. I've only had one crash in Far Cry 2 and that was after 17 hours of gameplay. All other games are fine. 3DMark is fine. They're probably the most stable nVidia drivers I've ever used! The only issue is this corruption on startup
The card has been working fine up until the 180.xx drivers.
I do overclock my 9600GT, but that can't be the issue as 3D games are fine and an overclocking issue wouldn't show up on the desktop, especially after just starting up. I don't really want to start messing around with older drivers if I can avoid it, so I was hoping somebody had come across this or had any suggestions. I'm at a loss.
Thanks - sorry for long post
EDIT: OK, just tried the 178.24 WHQL drivers and the problem has vanished. Guess my system doesn't like the 180.xx's
