My aunt wants to upgrade an old PC so that she can give it to her son so he can play games.

I've had a look at the spec quickly.
P4 2.9ghz
1.5gb RAM
Radeon X300 series graphics card.
Running Windows Xp home

She wants it so that the machine can play minecraft and world of warcraft.
Will this machine be able to handle that? If not, which parts should I upgrade?

In all honesty I'd bin it or sell it and start from scratch as pretty much every part needs upgrading. Not to mention the motherboard which you haven't mentioned will need replacing the and PSU is probably basic at best.

You would be better to just bin / sell the lot and start over. The case and possibly the PSU may be salvageable but I doubt it.

Do you have a budget?

just as a rough idea of what you would need, for the job there is money to be saved on things like HDD optical drive (if sata) and monitor keyboard mouse + case.

You will have to dump the old mobo and chip though as there past it.

Of course. I like the case in your spec and I know its cheaper but at least with mine there is a (somewhat limited) upgrade to Ivy.

del, what p4 cpu are we talking about here? what socket? core name? rip the heatsink off if you need to find out.

dont go binning things cause someone on a forum told you to.

A half decent p4 runing at 3ghz with 4 to 8 gig of ram will run minecraft and wow no problem.

a cheap hd 6450 gpu will be perfect.

so find out what socket, what the core name is(will be on the cpu itself or run cpu-z)
and go from them.
