Right guys need some advice here, im throughly fed up of having a company, dont get me wrong, its great having a reasonably flash motor for pennies and hassle, but I miss tinkering.I miss getting my hands dirty,I actually miss getting my ass outside in the freezing cold and cursing and grazing my knuckles, and not being able to clean my hands properly for the next few days.

Basically im bored, and i need something to do,the xbox and dvd's aint cutting it.So i need some ideas, Ideally something oldish, with lots of part availability (cheapish) and engine potential (transplants or whatever), obviously something also which is easy to work on.

So come one, theres your challenge give me some ideas :D

Something american classic, As long as you don't get the populer ones like chargers, challengers or you get the wrong year can be piced up very chepily. Loads of after market add on's which even with shipping and taxes are way cheaper than uk parts for other cars.

Maybe a trans am

200SX S13, slap an SR20DET in it - that should keep you busy for a while

Tempting as i have a SR20DE sat in the garden (out of a primera :p ), but im thinking older, if i go for nissan (well datsun).

"Project" type cars have become ridiculously expensive lately, so this may not be as easy as you think. I've been watching anything tasty and cheap on Ebay over the last few weeks as I am after something similar.

We've had tatty S12 Silvias going for £800, BMW E30 325i's fetching £900 with no MOT(!), rotten non-runner Chevettes at £400, Mantas going for over 2 grand..... it's bloody insane. What happened to the whole "Old fast cars are worth bog-all" trend of a few years ago :(

I've always fancied doing a Mini. Me and a mate were given one in our early teens and had great fun stripping it down but we never got to the point of putting it back together as the shell required repairs beyond on capabilities and we didn't have any money left from our paper rounds.

It certainly fits your criteria - simple, plenty of cheap parts, easy to work on and you can be as sensible or as mad as you like with the engine as most things have been shoehorned into a Mini at some point.

Mini sounds intriguing, but just about every pre 90 model tends to be a real rust bucket, which isnt much of a problem but it leads me to think that it wont be suitable for lots of power without major fettling.

Love a Capri tho, or an old escort but these are really fetching silly money.

I thought about the silvia, again another car to shoehorn a sr20de(t) into. Not really keen on old VX's tbh.

If i go for a e30 it'd have to be a tourer, and as you say these are still pretty expensive for what they are.

My mate has suggested a Rove 400 tourer with the rover turbo lump in it...

Good luck finding one! Best bet would be a 420 hatch or something as you may be able to find a turbo one of those, otherwise would be an engine swap job.

There used to be a 220 Turbo estate in my village. Is that a factory option or was it a home brew?

EDIT
I think Rover 200 estates look dead cool. Really!

This.

Fit quad headlamps off an HL. Rebuild the suspension with new bushes and shocks, lower an inch or two. Fit detailed Sprint alloys, with 205 profile tyres.

Pull out the engine and fit a 3.0 Stag V8 or a 2 litre 16 valve Sprint. Fettle the engines. Drop on the rear axle from a Sprint. Weld up the rear diff.

Tidy up some bodywork.

Enjoy!

:p

220 turbo (hatch)
420 turbo (saloon)

420 (estate) never had a 2.0 turbo as far as i know... but ive seen conversions.

Ooh, it must have been a conversion then, because it was most definitely turbocharged. Crafty old geezer who owned it too!

Ok im getting myself confused here, did they do a 400 est or a 200 est or did they do both, wheres AGW when you need him :p i dont think any of them had a turbo as std.

How about these:
