Basically, I'm a Graphic Designer, have been for 2 years now and I have always used Photoshop, Dreamweaver and fireworks for creating sites. I've heard a lot of positive stuff about Wordpress. But could someone explain to me in NOOB terms what Wordpress is, who it is useful for and what all the rage is about. I understand its made mostly for blogs, but im confused?

Used to be a blogging CMS (content management system). Now it's a very flexible CMS with a considerable community behind it.

It's very easy to get to grips with in comparison to the other solutions out there. Well documented and supported with updates.

It's not the lightest weight, but with some effort you can have it performing well.

One thing to note, wordpress.org is what I'm referring to, that's the one you download and install yourself. Wordpress.com give you a blog that you have limited control over certain aspects.

If you're a graphic designer, it would be a good idea to learn how to make custom themes and sell them, very popular £££.

I'm looking very deeply into getting to grips with wordpress, im unsure of its capabilitys though. For instance, I want to make a portfolio / business website for myself, but i want a fully fuctional, smooth working gallery, as do I want smooth rollover transitions e.g. fade in and out when links are moused over. But is any of this possible within wordpress?
