If your going to Uni at the end of September you could wait for the new core duo 2 chips. "Memrom", i think they are called.

when are they being released?

plus all this is dependant on price, although i have to wait for my grant and student loan to come through first.

good call, they offer 64 bit (bonus for vista) and offer performance increase for the same battery consumption. (form memory around 15%)

from what i've read the price difference should be closer to the £50 mark rather than 100. Pricing shoiuld be announced on the 28th, anyone who breaks the nda before is unlikely to get stock.

if you can't wait though, core duo is still a very capable chip.

the pegasus 660 is the duo, the pegasus 665 is the duo 2. (not sure if I can link to laptop suppliers?

ALso warranty is important to consider on a £1k laptop, some suppliers offer 3 years as standard, some offer 1 year then can cost between 1-200 pounds for a further 2 years.

i think im gonna pass on Vista and 64 bit atm as they both have their discrepances(sp). vista is only in beta stages and it is very unlikely i will get it until it is capable of running certain programs that wont run on it at the moment. and with 64 bit you need 64 bit drivers wont ya?

yeah that this the argument. 64 bit will need 64 bit apps and hardware support. Things like webcams and printers are likely to cause problems and firms are probably going to take a year or so to catch up with the new 64 bit vista. In which time it is likely to be upgrade time...

games such as farcry and hl2 have been recoded in 64 but the only difference seems to be a few fps increase and faster loading times.

I think andatech did a good article a week or so ago about the benefits of duo 2 over duo. Basically if you can afford it there is no reason not too, if you already have a duo or are strapped for cash then there is no major loss.

i think ill stick with 32bit for now. until i can get the apps i need in 64 bit. i know the load time will be slower and such but i can wait. shouldnt take long for them to catch up really should it.

also does this mean i wont be able to play some of my old games on a 64 bit system?

The 64-bit version of Vista looks pretty terrible at the moment. Granted, it's a Beta and should only be criticised as a Beta, but given MS is pushing for an October release, it makes you wonder if they can really fix it up.

If not, I fear mainstream 64-bit computing will be delayed yet again.

yeah i have my doubts about vista. aparently it wont run many programs that are out now. they seem to be trying to get it over and done with. its gonna be xp all over again.
something like

specs 1.5 GB of space required.

which means 1.5 GB plus the rest of your 20GB hard drive for updates
