I need some help with finding a mainboard which has apart the PCI Express x16 Slot for the VGA another Pci Express Slot x8 for a Raid Card.

Do the mainboards which have 2 x 16x Slots allow me to use the second slot for the raid controller?

Current Spec is.

C2D 6300 @ 2.8Ghz
Gigabyte 965P-S3 Mainboard
1GB x 2 DDRII 800Mhz
X1950Pro

You could try the 680i based boards, but any SLI board should do it - just run both slots at 8x - with my Asus 650i I would have to flip the SLI paddle to do that

Running the GFX at 8x isnt likley to affect performance to much

EDIT : As the 680i boards are 2x 16x then running the mobo in SLI mode should do the trick

The raid card in question is a Dell Perc 5/i Controller and it needs a Pci Express x8 slot.

Do any of the new P35 boards support a x16 VGA in the first slot and 8x in the second slot if both are populated?

No, the second slot is restricted to x4, and only if you've got no x1 cards in the other remaining slots.

Are you on crack? Does that look like a PCI-E card to you? :D It's a PCIe card and will work in the PCIe slot irrespective of the VGA card in the x16 slot.

Thanks a lot for your help.

If the raid card runs at 4x it should be more than enough, I am just planning a 3 disk raid 5 array for the moment.

Btw, since the card has an x8 interface, will it fit without problems in a x16 slot?

Lol, but as you can see, the interface is larger than that of an PCIe x1 slot ;)

Quote from Dell Website

"PERC 5/i

PERC 5/i is a PCI Express based SAS RAID controller that provides enterprise class protection and performance for supported PowerEdgeTM servers. The Dell PERC 5/i is used to connect internal hard drives in PowerEdge servers and PowerEdge SC servers. PERC 5/i utilizes high performance SAS 3 Gb/s technology to connect to the hard drives, and the latest generation of host interface technology, PCI Express (PCI-E). With support for RAID levels 1, 5, 10, and 50, PERC 5/i provides multiple protection options to suit a wide range of applications. For non-critical data, RAID level 0 is also available.

No but Asus supposedly will have a couple of top-end P35 mobos that will run dual x8 using an additional chip to reconfigure the lanes.

Indeed, just put in in any pci-e x16 slot.

A RAID card using the second graphics slot? Am I misunderstanding? I thought a RAID card would be a PCIe card using the little slot.

A pci-e x16 doesnt have to be a graphics slot  , its just like pci, any pci-e device can use any pci-e slot as long as the pci-e slot is fast enough to support it...

The raid card just uses the pci-e interface that is fast enough, my guess it pci-e x4 and x1 were too slow for it, so it uses x8...
