Hey guys,
I bought a Pre-Overclocked Bundle from Overclockers just over a year ago i'd say. The Bundle was:
i7 920 (D0)
Gigabyte EX58-UD5
Patriot Viper DD3 1600
(Titan CPU Cooler)
Overclocked at 4.0Ghz (Well it actually seems like 3.8 but goes to 4.0 when Turbo boost turns on or something)

But the problem is i've started using programs like adobe After Effects and other Video Editing software and i'm in great need of some more RAM to deal with it all.

I would like to upgrade to about 12GB or more RAM but i'm worried that if I change my RAM it'll mess with the Overclock of my system and considering I'm a HUGE novice at things like this I wouldn't have a clue what to do if that happened.

So I was just wondering what would be the best option for me and also would getting more RAM mess with my OC?

Also what would be better for me, to add on to my current RAM with something like the Kingston HyperX Genesis 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-109-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389 or to get something like the Corsair 12GB DDR3 2000Mhz Dominator-GT (would this RAM even work with my motherboard) or the Corsair 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Dominator Memory

As you can probably tell i'm truly a novice at this kind of thing and have actually never upgraded/put in RAM before so any help would be greatly appreciated! ;)

Interested in the reply. I'm buying a new pre built system with 8gb of RAM overclocked, but kind of feel obliged to go the whole 16gb hog so as not to have issues in the future with having to mess with the overclock myself should I want to add RAM.

@ DanKurt

I'm in the same position as you & bought exactly the same overclock bundle with 6Gb of ram. (24th July 2009: how time flys)

There are a couple of things to look out for.

1) If you try to add to your current ram you may run into problems in that one of the memory slots is too close to the dual CPU cooler fan to allow the memory to be installed.

2) I have looked in the current BIOS settings and the voltage on the Viper 6Gb memory is set @ 1.66 volts. Some memory dimms are rated lower than this!

I am tempted to try replacing the existing RAM with 3 No 4Gb modules giving a total of 12Gb & making sure that they are rated to at least 1.65V. Leaving the overclock settings in place & hope for the best???

on x58 you would need more qpi/vtt voltage for sure with 12gb

on sb/ib 16gb+ would run at upto 2133mhz+ without any need in imc voltage increase due to no bclk overclocking,

For me, changing from 6gb to 12gb in a 3x4 config required a tiny jump in qpi voltage, previous 6gb kit ran on tighter timings of 7-7-7-24 compared to 9-9-9-27 on the 12gb kit.
