Hi guys,

A friend of mine has recently been hacked into on her laptop, long story but I'm in the process of wiping and reloading her laptop and I've advised that she may be better protected by a decent 3rd party modem/router than using the free standard issue BT Home Hub (I think its v2.0?), as from my own experience and tests done online, a decent router will always give better protection.

So, my question is, whats a decent wireless ADSL modem/router that will be compatible with her BT internet, and doesn't cost too much? (Possible?)

I used to use and recommend Netgear but my current Netgear isn't great at all, so I'm also looking for a change myself but don't really know much about the other makes/models?

Cheers chaps :D

The Homehub will be fine as long as it is blocking incoming connections.

Hi KIA,

Thanks for your reply :)

I'm not to confident that the rats that hacked her don't have access to the hub now, and from my testing generic 'free' routers don't provide the same protection levels as a decent one would?

Any thoughts, or any recommendations for a replacement?

Thanks again :)

Although probably true, you have to look at the greater likelihood that she did something stupid, as users are the greatest security flaw, no amount of security will change that.

Unfortunately in this case you are absolutely correct (as said its a long story, but ultimately her fault) I'm just trying to give her a bit of extra security if I can, and totally wiping her pc in conjunction with a more stout router, I thought it'd be best for her to start off (again) on the right foot?

:)

This is SOOOOO true, its more like she clicked a false link or a pic on something like FaceBook or Messenger (anyone of them).

Best thing you can do is educate your friend on the pitfalls of link clicking if you HAVE NO IDEA where from!!!!

Haa haa, so true lol :D

Some education already given, more to come believe me ;)

So with all this talk about the problem being between the chair and the keyboard, is a better, decent router needed, my gut says yes, but its not always reliable, it normally says 'pizza' :D

What ever you put there it will not stop anyone gaining access if software is downloaded by a quick link click sorry.

EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION;););)

I think that she could have all ready had a very costly lesson in that field anyhow with a rough educated guess:eek::eek::eek:

I doubt it. Perform a factory reset if you want to be certain. You won't gain anything from a new router.
