Hello guys,

I have a problem!!! Basically I had Virgin Media (good old NTL) installed today, well, installed ... because the guy wouldn't walk on the conservatroy roof (cant blame him) he put the cable modem downstairs next to the TV. He said I need to go to COMPETITOR and buy a Cable Wireless Router with an Access Point. They only cost £35 quid he says. Well, I haven't seen any tbh for that price.

Can you guys recommend me a cheap and decent WiFi Cable Router with Access point?

Thanks

My PC is not WiFi (it is too far away from the tv) so I need an access point or USB adapter kit he called? What else do I need? Do any of the Overclockers cable routers come with that?

Thanks for the help btw

Couple of the ADSL routers come with USB dongles, not sure about the cable ones.

You can get a USB dongle or even an internal PCI card for £15 - £20 anyway.

k, cheers mate :)

does it matter than the brand of the router and the card/usb adaptor are from different brands?

Shouldn't make any difference at all, just as long they both use compatible Wireless technologies (e.g. A/B/G)

Lynksys work fine with NTL. Just make sure you get a 'Wireless cable' router and a PCI wireless adapter are best.

Well, I have another question. If I already have a cable modem why should I need a Cable Wireless router too?

If the computer is to be used next to, or in reach of the modem with an ethernet cable, there's no reason whatsoever to get a router.

You will however only be able to use a single device on the internet though.

Nope, the computer is not next too, they are in different floors. What I mean is that if I have a cable modem wouldnt be enough with a non cable Wireless router to connect the modem?

A cable router is not a replacement for your modem, it just means that it is compatible with a cable modem (i.e. you can use an Ethernet lead between the two).

You need:

NTL modem ----> wireless router ----> PC with wireless card/dongle

The modem connects to the wireless router with an Ethernet lead, then the router broadcasts the internet 'signal' wirelessly to your PC.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL - current uptime 93 days (no rebooting) - hammered it with 5 x Eve Online Accounts, 2 x BF2142 accounts and 2 x machines running Bittorrent - the router thinks its funny and just plods on :)

Well worth the extra few quid over other routers.

I currently use mine with a 3rd party firmware - HyperWRT + thibor 15c.

More info on the WRT54G series can be obtained here also:

I like that LinkSys one but I will still need an access point near my computer as the router is going to sit near the TV and thats about 35 feet away from my computer.

So for what you say I need

NTL ---> NTL Cable Modem ---> Wireless Cable Router ---> Wireless Access Point or PCI Adapter

does that sound ok?

No, as long as you have some sort of wireless adaptor for the PC it should pick up the routers signal.

But I havent got an adaptor so I am going to need one ... :( more money ... any recommended ones?

Will this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-000-AB do?

Sorry for the amount of questions, and thank you very much for help :D

Ezy.

If you have a spare PCI-E slot (don't get it confused with regular PCI) then it should be fine.

If you aren't sure, a USB dongle might be better?

when i had this

i made sure the guy left plenty me plenty of interior cabling so i could run it myself.

now, the cable comes in behind the TV, and it meets a junction box, with 2 outputs. One of the TV and one for the t'internet. The internet cable he left me was massive, and i undid my skirting board, ran the cable behind the skirting board along my lounge, to the hallway, there i tacked it to the doorframe, and run it up the wall to the ceiling. I ran the cable in a hole where an old central heating pipe was, up to the old boiler cupboard, then out into the bedroom where the PC was.

If you havent got any holes with which to put your cable through, you can buy exterior cable. Just drill a hole in the wall to get the cable out, tack it to the brickwork, then drill a hole in the bedroom wall to bring it back in.

Helps if you've got a decent hammer drill already. Then you just need a good masonry drill bit, and they can come handy again so a worthwhile purchase :)
