OK, I'm selling my ocz flex as I'm going to go with a mips ram cooler to get it into my 1/2" loop without using F barbs.

You can buy the cooler to do 4 sticks or 2 sticks, if I get the 4 stick version I can still just use 2 sticks in there but its like £40 more.

Also the ram has to be without heatspreaders and I'm clocking a Q6600 so 9x500 would realistically be the very best clock I could get.. I'd live with 9x400 meaning pc6400 should be more than enough.

Looking at 4GB min just for the sake of an upgrade and to push me onto vista 64 so do I get...

4 x 1gb
2 x 2gb
4 x 2gb (cheeky! 8gb?? why not when its £60 for 4gb??)

And that said, do I just get dirt cheap pc6400 without heatspreaders like samsung or elixir seeing as its rated to run as fast I want?

Or get something like geil black dragon that comes without heatspreader but is a more premium brand (any point?)

Or get some ram with decent micron d9 (is that right) chips and risk taking the heatspreaders off myself?

Argh! too many choices! what would you do?

Thats what u got to ask yourself, would your CPU block perform better without the added waterflow restriction not to mention extra heat. I mean, if all you want to run is default ram speed, why watercool the ram?

this pc is going to be very much more about show than go tbh, watercooling ram is pointless full stop but it looks nice :)

Then just buy the cheapest RAM that will be in-spec without any heatspreaders. I have to say that the whole concept of a PC that is "more show than go" makes me feel almost physically ill:D

LOL....it's no different from customizing a car or buying an expensive outfit or having an expansive beard.

:D ROFLMAO! Yeah, I have to fend the ladies off with a stick with this baby on my face!

Happy Holidays all!

so mr beard.. do you have a view on the actual memory? 2 x 4gb, 4 x 1gb, 4 x 2gb.. cheapy stuff for pc6400 or expensive to maybe clock or does 4 x 2 or 2 x 2 limit your overcloking so much there's no point..

does 4 x 8500 run at 8500 for example?

and walter.. shush, you've seen enough of my pcs to know they're about the looks ;)

As far as 4 x 1gb or 4 x any modules at 8500 or any other speed, that will largely depend on the MOBO, not the RAM. Any board will have an easier load and clock better with 2 modules vs 4 modules, all other things equal. 2 x 2gb makes sense as it is significantly less load on the memory controller. I don't know of any 4gb modules so 2 x 4gb is anyone's guess.

Even the so called "bad" PC6400 2gb modules will allow you to run a CPU at 400FSB+ if you are clocking at a 1:1 ratio. That is usually a very solid OC. If you want to be guaranteed to run faster than DDR800 on the memory with 2 x 2gb, then I'd suggest you shop and find a 2 x 2gb kit rated for DDR1000 or better. Currently it is VERY hard to find and VERY VERY VERY expensive when you do.

sorry I meant 4 2gb modules for 8gb but I'm sure thats pointless under server level.

I think you've just confirmed what I though, I might as well just get 2 x 2gb modules of some half decent but not super expensive ram. 9 x 400 will be fine for my oc, I haven't got the patience to get a stable clock past that sort of speed anyway.

That's what I would do. 2 x 2gb prices are coming down right now also.
