Okay, i'm currently looking to upgrade my gpu, and i'm stuck for selection.
I don't know whether just to go with the HD5770, or if I should stretch my budget (which I can't really do) to get a HD 5850.

What I need to know is:

Are they cool + quiet?
How much better are they than a 5770?
And are they really worth the £220 price tag?

+ Thanks in advance.

What resolution is your monitor?

I'm running a single 5770 at 1920x1080 and so far it has been great with high or ultra high settings in the majority of games.

But if you want ultra high and maximum AF and AA get a 5850.

Nah, high is enough + i run at 1920x1200 for desktop.

Probably use the same as you in games - just the 8400GS can't do that in games with only 30fps or less :)

+ I think it'll be the HD5770 :D

You could always wait to see what Nvidia are going to bring out, maybe something would be better for you for a better price?

I'm still on my 8800GTX from a few years ago, I'm upgrading it shortly like yourself, but I'm just biding my time and waiting to see what Nvidia bring out and also to see if ATI either A) Drop prices (I wish) or B) Add a new card into the market to combat Nvidia.

I think if you can get a 5850 you should, but can you? I know if I had the money I would have got one, but having said that I'm very happy with the 5770.

If you do get the 5770 maybe look at one of the cards on which you can adjust the voltage to squeeze a bit more performance from the card.

Not really helping am I? I'll shut up. :D

I have just bought a 5770 and its a nice card. Thing is though if i had the machine to run a 5850 like yours could thats what i would have bought. The reason being is a 5850 which is twice the price of a 5770 will last twice as long in my opinion as it has the horsepower to play dx11 games where as the 5770 will struggle so do yourself a favour and pay a little bit more to save yourself more in the future. I don't really understand buying a top grade machine like you have then buying an 8400 to go with it as its such a waste so this time give it a top end card.

I should be getting a HD5770, and then go till about christmas, and then see whats up on the market :)

Maybe a HD5970 is £350 then? (probably about 1%chance though :P)

Tbh if you are gonna wait till december the market will have changed again. I have to ask why you bought that 8400 to put in a top end system? 5770 will keep you happy though just not as much as a 5850 especially when overclocked.

This.

I didn't by the 8400GS, I didn't have money to get a GPU when I bought my system, so I put my old GPU in from a different PC
