So my Astro's are finally giving in after about four years so I'm on the lookout for a new headset within the region of £100 give or take a few quid. I'm really not bothered about having a fancy looking pair of 'gaming' headphones, I just want something that's good for audio since I spend a lot of my time listening to music. They don't NEED to have a mic but it would definitely be preferred, although if I can get a pair of high quality headphones that don't include a mic then please send it through as it's not much of a problem.

Cheers

I currently use the Steelseries Siberia Elite which is very very comfy and has some very crisp sound. The microphone is a bit on the quiet side though and I can't seem to find a way to boost it but other than that it's ultra comfortable too - I use it daily and often for ~6 hours a day for Skype calls, immersive gaming, and TeamSpeak/Vent. I have listened to music on the odd occassion with them and they do pick up sounds I've never heard over my speakers before though compared to Astros I don't think they'll compare - unless you're using a MixAmp?

I'm not using a MixAmp with them unfortunately. I have the wireless pair that became discontinued as the A50s were released, and in order to use the wireless mixamp with PC it requires a cable that they no longer supply.

these will be reviewed on our forums by an unbiased forum member but from my brief use they would satisfy your needs.

I struggled to fault them at that price point.

however if you are willing to splash then pushing the budget to 125 you can get some DT770 from beyerdynamic which is essentially the MMX 300 gaming headset without the microphone and different pads.

Thanks, I may take a look at the Beyerdynamic headset you mentioned. The only question I have is how would I connect these to a PC? Unless they come with a USB connector or something, every other professional headset I've looked at doesn't come with any adapters for connecting them to a PC. Also, would they still have good sound quality even without a sound card/amp?

They look very comfy and I think if they were worth it I would stretch the extra 20 quid.

for the dt770 you would possibly need a soundcard depends on what you have?

there is a 32 ohm pro version in a similar price range fine with pretty much most soundcard set ups

and an 80ohm version but the 250 ohm will definitely be too much for on board

check out RyanR1987 review thread in sound city to read about headphones how they work for music and gaming etc

Infact you're probably best off if you're considering the dt770 talking to the guys in soundcity.

Another option is a pair of Creative Aurvana Live which are 51.98 I think great little pair of phones ok not the most stylish pair but they will provide unparalleled sound for the money.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-179-CL comes with a free mic and leaves you some change for a soundcard.

Yeah I only have an onboard soundcard unfortunately.

which motherboard?

I'm sure for the 32 ohm you'll be ok.

a DGX would be a big enough jump up or at a later date you can get a soundblaster Z

I mean the CAL and a creative soundblaster Z OEM would come in just under £100 and that sound card has enough to power larger phones than the CAL!

but I'm sure a DGX would be fine for the DT770 32 or 80's

It's an AsRock Z68 Pro3. Maybe having second thoughts about it now. I've been needing to get an SSD for my system for a long time and I think I may just go for one of those instead, since my current headphones will last me until Christmas hopefully when I can replace them.

No problem Fortunately other than prices not much changes in sound so it will probably be the same advice then.

Same budget. £100 or less.

But no soundcard.
ASUS P9X79 Pro on-board

Recommendations please?

(I have an ASUS ROG Vulcan ANC which has some issues -- sending back to be repaired/replaced but will keep it for LANs etc as it has really good noise cancelling headphones)

Steelseries Siberia V2 any good?

Do you need a micropphone infront of your face?

If no DT770 PRO 32 Ohm or the Creative Aurvana Lives as recommended.

If yes Kingston Cloud would be an excellent option

Siberias are very nice and light to wear terrible sound cancellation and everyone will hear what you are listening to. Thery are however pretty good for gaming and general use. I would say the Kingstons were better but it's upto you.

Other options would be the Razer Kraken
