Hi guys,

Looking for a new motherboard to replace the 780i that I bought a week or so ago. I had some problems with my computer and it all pointed towards the mb. I spoke to the company I bought the mb from and they said they have occurred many issues and problems with the 780i but even though they aren't faulty and seem fine, they do have a compatibility problems with some hardware.

They provided me with a few solutions... even tho they aren't sli compatible, they mentioned P35, x38 & x48. All of these are crossfire, but are suppose to be the nuts for intel chips and perform the best.

What type would you recommend; P35, x38 or x48? or would you suggest going for a SLI board; 680i, 750i or 790i?

System:

Intel Wolfdale 3.16
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2
BFG 8800GTX 768mb DDR3

If you only have a single graphics card then P35 is the way to go. Or you might want to wait a week or two for the new P45's to come out.

Pretty much anything from Abit, ASUS, Gigabyte or DFI will be sound.

I think the way things have gone, I would like to have something tried and tested, I've had so much hassle with parts at the minute... nearly threw my computer out the window this week. So wouldn't like to wait for the new board, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

x48 choices...

Asus P5E Deluxe Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Not sure about the 750i and 790i, can only find DDR3 with 790i's.

The Asus Rampage Formula is much loved, but whether it's worth the extra money over the P5E is debatable.

The DFI LanParty LT X48 is looking like it may be the best of the lot, providing you can be bothered with the many many settings in the DFI BIOS.

With my current record, I wouldn't bother with all those settings etc, drove me mad last time...

What is the difference between the 2 then? Can't see much difference, well... isn't noticeable.

The only thing with the rampage... my ram (corsair twin dominator dd2) is big with fan on the top, would that get in the way of the gfx card or can I use the slot on the bottom?

Then the DFI would have you jumping out the window ;)

The Rampage is a ROG labeled board, so not much more than a few more BIOS options and different stickers over the P5E Deluxe.

Whoops! Yeah just noticed... link was given to me so didn't check. With this mb, could I use the slot on the bottom or would this cause problems?

I'm not sure tbh. I would expect that you could use the top slot without any issues. You'll probably have to install the memory before installing the graphics card tho.

Yeah. I think as long as I'm able to use either slot, I think I will be fine. It will be a tight squeeze tho.

Glad I'm ordering the Antec 1200, hope OCs get some more in soon.

You cant really go wrong with the intel boards, there simply the better overclockers and have the much better stability. The only reason Nforce is around is because nvidia wont allow for SLI technology to go on non nvidia boards (with exception of skulltrail), this means there monopolsing on the people who want SLI and charging them a fortune for the privlage.

If your sticking to the one GTX for now, P35/45 will suffice, if you ever think about going crossfire you need an X38/48. Like you said tho, you dont want the hassle of the 780i again, so its intel all the way buddy, I had nothing but problems myself mate with nvidia boards, I have had four in the last 18months :\
