Recently I've to get back into counter-strike 1.6 again and currently I am playing for a friend's team. But because I haven't played the game for a while and I've been playing other games my current set-up isn't really helping me.

As of this moment I am currently using a Razer Copperhead which seems to be on its last legs and a worn out Steelseries S&S pad too. I did try to replace the mouse recently but made the unfortunate mistake of buying a Steelseries Ikari Laser mouse thinking it would perfect but turned out to be not suited to my hand at all.

So rather than make the same mistake twice and also with a mousepad too, I would like to hear some opinions before I go rushing into buying anything again.

To help matters, mice I have tried and disliked are:

Logitech Mx518
Steelseries Ikari Laser
Razer Diamondback

Mousepads I have tried and disliked are:

QPAD
fUnc pad
Icemat
Steelseries 4D

Do you play very low sensitivity, low, medium, fast or very fast sens'?

not really liked any of those mice mentioned, but for games like 1.6 I'd choose a microsoft basic mouse (honest) or an intellimouse.

depends on your game style though, 1.6 players usually play at very low sensitivity (having to move the mouse a lot to achieve little motion)

if you do play at low sens, it's important to have a mouse that does not still track when it's lifted off the surface. some mice still track when they're 1 - 2CM above the surface, making the cursor move where you dont want it to while you're lifting and replacing the mouse.

best mouse I've used for that so far is probably the standard deathadder.

mat wise, they're all qite similar. SS 5L is quite good for low sens fragging, but I prefer the Xactmat, despite it's smaller size. it's all quite subjective.

[edit] pretty much ignore DPI too, it's a joke half the time.

Deathadder + eXactmat ;)

As with most of these threads though, people will just recommend what they're using.

This is the problem, it's really hard for me to find something that suits my style.

I would class myself as a mid sensitivity user, with a sensitivty of around 1.8-2.4 in games and all acceleration turned off.

Also the way I grip the mouse is unusual too as I don't seem to use only one grip. I tend to switch between claw and palm grip depending on what sort of aiming I need to pull off.

The thing I disliked about the other mice I tried, especially the Ikari and Mx518, was the fact my hand didn't sit on the mouse comfortably. The Ikari was just way too low and every time I moved the mouse it felt like it was always slipping out of my hand. The Mx518 on the other hand just felt like a totally awkward shape and didn't feel right.

Also, I have used the MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 in the past and got on quite well with it but I believe now my aiming and grip style is different now from how it was back then, so I'm not entirely sure whether it would suit me.

Another issue as well is because I have wasted money on paying steep prices for supposedly 'good' mice and then found out they haven't suited me, I feel reluctant to pay the same again.

In regards to mousepads, I think you're probably right they are all quite the same from what I can see from the images and reviews. For me I think what I need is something between smooth and hard but not too soft or too rough either.

Sorry, I really am an awkward one aren't I. :p
